Aness Khorram - Simon Fraser University

Year of study: 4th Year

Program area: Joint Major Communications/Sociology

Why did you choose this program/school? I had heard great things about the Communications program at SFU. I took a few intro level courses at CapilanoU and decided that communications, along with Sociology, peaks my interest.

Specific area of interest/concentration your studies: I have a variety of interests in both sociology and communications, but if I had to characterize it in one category it would be critical theory. Specifically, media influence and class struggle/power relations.

Your career aspirations: As a soon to be Bachelor in Arts graduate, I am slightly concerned about my career aspirations. Over the past few years I?ve been volunteering a lot in community building projects with teenagers and children, specifically with social housing in East Vancouver. I really enjoy this type of work, however as a career perhaps not. I also enjoy small scale entrepreneurship. I started a small home maintenance business this summer, so perhaps business is in store for me post grad.

Job you want in 10 years:
Tough question. I?ll give a generic, yet truthful response. A job that I can support myself and my family, while at the same time positively contributing to society, whether it be running a small business or working in communities. Challenging and difficult work is definitely in the cards for my future. I?m not the type that likes to be too comfortable.

Volunteer and work placements:
As mentioned, I?ve worked in community building projects over the past few years, serving as a coordinator of the junior youth empowerment program (www.wordswell.ca) for 3 years. I was also a sous chef several years back at a busy restaurant downtown for 2 years. And as mentioned, I?ve started a small business in outdoor home maintenance a couple months ago. A few other places I?ve volunteered and worked at, but I won?t bore you.

Hobby/Hobbies:
Too many to name. Recreation: Mountain biking, snowboarding, hiking, camping, soccer, badminton, squash, ping pong (almost any racquet sport). LOVE anime, Miyazaki for sure. Traditional persian music is my thing. Trying out new and different Southeast Asian restaurants (and food in general).

Favorite thing to do in Vancouver: Being in the beautiful forests surrounding the city and eating out!

What?s your favorite thing about FCAT? I love the course selection. The instructors in general seem to be always at the forefront of knowledge in their fields, keeps things relevant and applicable.

What?s your favorite thing about SFU?
Being on top of a mountain. Access to squash courts and great mountain bike trails.
