Entrepreneurialism ? A Duck By Any Different Shade | All Web ...

This article has been viewed 11 times.

There once was an unsightly duckling with feathers all stubby and brown. He did not realize he would at some point be a swan so any face-to-face marketing method he ever used in the end resulted in widespread ridicule. This after all led the duck/swan to venture away from his family (who additionally considered him a bit of an odd duck).

In all places the duck went he was ridiculed and chased away from other better established (and finely groomed) enterprise fowl.

Then sooner or later whereas staying at the Blind Pigeon?s Inn he found the Web (free with the weekly rate). The Ugly Duckling had a wealth of work expertise in his first few weeks of life so he began a business catering to the camouflage wants of waterfowl during looking season.

Much to his shock and delight, orders began arriving and he turned very busy. The Ugly Duckling was a regular on the Waterfowl Submit Office and his earnings grew to the point where the Ugly Duckling bought the Blind Pigeon?s Inn and made it his corporate places of work and product warehouse.

He was nervous when Hen Entrepreneur magazine referred to as to see if he would conform to a beak-to-beak interview. He had previously put them off as a result of he was certain they?d find his appearance distasteful. When they arrived, Spanky Duckmeister continued to snap photos. The interview went very effectively and Ugly Duckling was blissful to receive his complimentary copy of Bird Entrepreneurs though the publisher should have changed his photograph with a creature way more beautiful than he.

In time the Ugly Duckling (now a glorious swan) would come to know that point had modified his appearance and his entrepreneurial spirit discovered ultimate freedom online. He at all times wondered if it was the entrepreneurialism that changed his look or just gave him the boldness he needed for others to see him differently.

The truth is entrepreneurialism won?t change your appearance, but an online enterprise does not discriminate either. People of all ethnicities and ages have discovered the entrepreneurial spirit could also be less difficult than starting a business in a brick and mortar store.

Most online shops begin as a result of the entrepreneur has a passion for the product or service being offered. Like our fictional storybook hero it was something that he had a private use for that resulted in a successful business and together with his rising success came a confidence, with that confidence came respect from others who had taken notice of his success.

Ultimately it really did not matter what he looked like, where he lived or how outdated he was. All that really mattered was that the Ugly Duckling understood the needs of his fowl-feathered friends.

There?s a lesson to be discovered from this story ? and it isn?t about ducks. Where can your personal ardour take you in online enterprise?

Russia's Yandex invests $15M in US search underdog (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Blekko, a Silicon Valley startup trying to build a spam-free search engine, is getting some love from Russia.

Yandex, the most popular search engine in Russia, is expressing its affinity with a $15 million investment in Blekko and a commitment to share some of its computing power and other technology with its new U.S. partner. Blekko is getting an additional $15 million from another group consisting mostly of its earlier investors ? U.S. Venture Partners, CMEA Capital and PivotNorth Capital

The alliance announced Thursday marks the first time Yandex has invested in a U.S. search service, according to Arkady Borkovsky, chief technology officer of Yandex's Silicon Valley lab. Yandex and its 3,000 employees hope to learn more about the nuances of U.S. search requests from Blekko.

"There could be a future for us here," Borkovsky said. "This is an interesting experiment for us and we are quite excited about it."

Yandex's investment in Blekko comes four months after the Russian company raised its profile in the U.S. with an initial public offering of stock that hasn't been a big hit on Wall Street so far.

Yandex's support is a coup for Blekko, a search engine on a crusade to remove the junk that can clutter the results of market leader, Google, and its two main rivals, Yahoo and Bing.

Blekko, which employs 27 people in Redwood Shores, Calif., tries to fight the search litter, or spam, by relying on humans to use hash tags to highlight the most useful results under frequently searched topics.

Just four months after Blekko hit the market late last year, Google unveiled sweeping changes to its search algorithm in an effort to reduce the rubbish showing up in its results from so-called "content farms" and other websites that had learned how to dupe Google's formula into giving a high ranking to largely irrelevant content.

Despite those changes, many of the results that Google delivers on frequently searched topics such as health remain a "train wreck," said Rich Skrenta, Blekko's CEO and founder.

Most Web surfers don't seem to have a problem with Google, which processes two out of three search requests in the U.S. Google's market dominance has held steady for years, despite challenges from Yahoo, Microsoft Corp.'s Bing and other startups, such as Cuil and Powerset, that have vowed to shake things up without leaving much of a dent.

Russia is one of the few countries where Google is a laggard. Yandex's share in Russia is almost as large as the one Google holds in the U.S., The advantage hasn't been as nearly as lucrative for Yandex, whose revenue this year is expected to be about $650 million. Google's U.S. revenue this year is expected to be between $17 billion and $18 billion.

The disparity may be one reason investors haven't been too keen on Yandex N.V.'s stock since it was priced at $25 in a May IPO. The shares stood at $22.13, down 77 cents, in early afternoon trading Thursday. The stock peaked at $42.01 on its first day of trading.

Skrenta, though, believes Yandex can help Blekko broaden its reach and improve its results. Besides giving it more money, Yandex is letting Blekko use some of its servers. That will give Blekko the means to more than double the size of its search index, which currently spans about 3 billion Web pages on 750 servers, Skrenta said. A larger index means Blekko should be able to do a better job responding to search requests on obscure topics that currently give its search engine problems.

If it works out like Skrenta hopes, more people will start coming to Blekko when they are looking for a Google alternative instead of Bing and Yahoo, which together have a roughly 30 percent share of the U.S. search market.

"People are rooting for the underdog in this space," Skrenta said.

Novartis drug may help older breast cancer patients (Reuters)

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) ? Novartis's bone drug Zometa extended survival in older breast cancer patients but failed to improve disease-free survival among younger women patients in a large-scale clinical trial, researchers said on Sunday.

Detailed data presented at the European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress (EMCC) in Stockholm showed that Zometa, a bisphosphonate drug known generically as zoledronic acid, only improved overall survival rates in patients who had undergone the menopause at least five years earlier.

Researchers said the effect was likely to be linked to levels of reproductive hormones, which are lower in women who have been through the menopause.

"The results have shown that zoledronic acid should not be used routinely for the treatment of early breast cancer. However, for those with low levels of female hormones, due either to natural aging or specific treatments to induce menopause, the approach appears very promising, as more women go on to rid themselves of the disease," said Robert Coleman of Britain's Sheffield University, who led the study.

He said the strong results in older women could lead to "a major new treatment approach" for post-menopausal patients.

Zometa, which generated sales of $2.1 billion for Novartis in 2010, is an intravenous drug from a widely used class of osteoporosis medicines called bisphosphonates.

It is increasingly being prescribed to help reduce or delay fractures and other skeletal complications in a variety of cancers that have spread to the bones. From 65 to 75 percent of breast cancer recurrences occur in the bones.

This trial, called AZURE and also published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Sunday, involved 3,360 women with early-stage breast cancer from 174 centers in Britain, Australia, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Taiwan and Thailand.

Patients randomly allocated receive standard chemotherapy and/or hormone therapy, either with or without the addition of Zometa, a drug that works by inhibiting the cells that break down bone, called osteoclasts.

The results showed that looking across all trial participants, there was no significant difference in disease-free survival or overall survival between patients who received Zometa and those who didn't. But in a subset of older patients, the addition of the Novartis drug did bring clear benefits.

These women, who had at least five years since their last period, had an overall survival rate at five years of 85 percent on Zometa compared with 79 percent for those not on the drug.

"This is a small but significant increase," Coleman told reporters at the Stockholm conference.

For all other patients, overall five-year survival was similar, at 86 percent in the Zometa group and 85 percent in the control group.

Investigators said that most surprising among the findings was the drug's effect on the rate at which the cancer recurred outside the bone. The relative risk for developing metastases, or secondary tumors, outside bone during treatment with Zometa was approximately halved in the postmenopausal women compared with the younger patients.

Coleman said the results shed new light on the role bones may play in the progress of the disease.

"The effects on metastasis and recurrence outside bone suggests that the bone marrow is an important sanctuary for tumor cells which can be activated after, sometimes, many years of dormancy," he said. "With help from bone marrow stem cells, they may then spread via the blood stream to set up metastases at other sites."

Archie's 70th looks at cancer, help for families (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? For families of ill children, a night or two or even more at the Ronald McDonald House is one way to help focus on their ailing kids without having to shoulder the burden of hotel costs. It's a lesson that the gang in Riverdale ? including Archie, Veronica, Jughead and others ? will learn firsthand this week.

The national network of homes, which provides free or inexpensive lodging for families near hospitals, is making an appearance in the issue of "Archie Comics" being released Wednesday.

In the 70th anniversary issue, No. 625, the kids at Riverdale High School find out that the younger sister of one of their fellow students is seriously ill with cancer and has to spend time in the hospital. The gang chips in to help to get the family to the Ronald McDonald House New York.

That realization sparks an epiphany for Archie and the others who, in turn, visit the house in New York City and volunteer their time and service, playing musical instruments, talking to kids and families and helping make things easier for those who are living there.

"Just because we've been, in a certain sense, a little insulated from the events of the real world, when we venture out or support or get behind something, it's like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval," said Jon Goldwater, co-chief executive of Archie Comics. "That makes things good for that person or that cause."

Dealing with cancer, and the help that Ronald McDonald House provides, fits that meter, he said.

The company's writers and artists ventured to the New York City house to meet not the children, their families who stay there and the staff. They painted the stairwells with a mural of Archie characters and a massive picture of the Riverdale gang, which now hangs in the house's playroom.

From there, Goldwater said the decision was made to focus on the house, not just in New York, but nationally.

Goldwater said Archie is "giving 100 percent of the profits" from the issue to the New York Ronald McDonald House, too.

That struck a chord with William T. Sullivan, president and CEO of the Ronald McDonald House New York.

He said that by having Shrill's sister come and stay at the actual house, "it kind of makes it all the more real" and gets the word out about the house to people who may not otherwise be aware.

For Dan Parent, who drew the issue, it's an achievement.

"Working on this issue was special on a number of levels ? the Ronald McDonald House is a very important charity and Archie has always been a huge supporter, so it was an honor to bring that relationship to life," he said. "Plus, it's Archie's 70th Anniversary Issue. It doesn't get cooler than that."

Fathom & Cinedigm: reinventing cinema entertainment | science ...

Tuesday?s post on ?A POWERFUL NOISE introduced me to Fathom. ?It seems like a great service but I have no idea about the pricing. ? I am curious to hear more from folks that have used it.

From Fathom?s website:

Fathom, the entertainment division of National CineMedia (NCM), is reinventing the who, what, when, where and how of cinema entertainment. It?s a revolutionary concept that uses NCM?s vast nationwide Digital Content Network to deliver truly one-of-a-kind entertainment events ? all showcased in amazing High Definition with Cinema Surround Sound ? to movie theatre audiences across North America. And each benefits from extensive marketing support.

Working directly with the country?s leading entertainment producers, Fathom offers unique marketing and distribution opportunities for highly coveted programming: live concerts, theatrical and DVD premieres, live broadcasts from The New York Metropolitan Opera, sports events, exclusive stand-up comedy engagements and much more.

The Digital Content Network is comprised of more than 14,500 digital screens, with 75% of the screens in the top 49 markets. This puts well over half of US households within 10 miles of the theatres, including Regal Cinemas, United Artists, Edwards Theatres, AMC Theatres, Cinemark/Century, Clearview Cinemas, Kerasotes Theatres, Goodrich Quality Theaters, Hoyts Theatres, Marcus Theatres, Malco Theatres, National Amusements Theatres and Georgia Theatre Company. Additionally, Fathom has limited distribution in local performing arts centers and theatres in specific markets.

Fathom?s technical staff receives, tests, encrypts and digests source content for seamless playback over the network to all participating theatres? auditoriums. Each auditorium is tested for optimum audio and visual presentation prior to event day. Plus, Fathom has a dedicated ?event management? department that manages all troubleshooting before, during and after the event to ensure its success.

It?s mostly been opera, concerts, and anime so far, but they have also presented This American Life and a live event with the film IOUSA. ?The full list is here.

Another similar service is Cinedigm, which to date seems to have focused solely on live events.

Michael Walker over at PangoFilms just tipped me to this announcement in BusinessWeek that says that focus is about to change. ?They have just done a distribution pact with Olympus Pictures? for some indie films. Things a be a changin??

GOP House chair: US solar industry could collapse (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A Republican House chairman is calling loans to the solar industry a poor bet and says it's reasonable to predict that the entire solar panel manufacturing business in America could collapse.

The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, California congressman Darrell Issa, is citing competition from China and other problems facing the American solar panel industry.

On Thursday, Issa released a report that says questionable accounting methods have been used to count "green jobs" and calls the term vague and poorly defined.

Issa says a $528 million loan to a now-bankrupt California solar energy company, Solyndra Inc., is just one example of the Obama administration's failed attempt to create green jobs. He says the loan was driven by appearances of political favoritism.

Turban bomb kills ex-Afghan president

A suicide attacker with a bomb in his turban posed as a Taliban peace envoy and assassinated a former Afghan president who for the past year headed a government council seeking a political settlement with the insurgents.

Tuesday's attack, carried out in former President Burhanuddin Rabbani's Kabul home, dealt a harsh blow to attempts at ending a decade of war. The killing of Rabbani, an ethnic Tajik and one of the wise old men of Afghan politics, will blunt efforts to keep in check the regional and ethnic rivalries that help feed the insurgency.

President Hamid Karzai cut short a visit to the United Nations and called on Afghans to remain unified in the face of Rabbani's "martyrdom." An emergency Cabinet meeting was called for Wednesday.

The attack came days after a daytime assault by insurgents on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters that deepened a sense of insecurity in the capital.

NATO said in a statement that two suicide bombers were involved in the attack on Rabbani, both of them men who had feigned a desire to reconcile with the government. It was unclear if a second bomber was able to detonate his explosives.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility, saying the killer had gone to Rabbani's home for talks.

"As soon as Rabbani came three steps forward to hug Mohammad Masoom, he triggered his explosive-filled jacket killing Rabbani, (another) Taliban militant Wahid Yar and four security guards present at the house," he told Reuters.

The Kabul police chief's office, in a statement, said the explosives had been hidden in the suicide bomber's turban.

Afghan officials, however, insisted there was only one attacker. Four men were wounded, including a key presidential adviser, said Mohammad Zahir, the head of criminal investigations for the Kabul police. Initial reports had four bodyguards killed but Zahir said those were incorrect.

Taliban flex muscles with Afghan assassination

Close friends of Rabbani said that the former president returned from a trip to Iran to meet with a man who had been described as a high-ranking Taliban contact. The visitor, a young man, was shown into the house by two of Rabbani's associates at the Afghan High Peace Council, who insisted that he did not need to be fully searched, said a friend who spoke anonymously because he was not a spokesman.

'His turban exploded'
When Rabbani appeared, the man shook the former president's hand and bowed as a sign of respect, said Fazel Karim Aimaq, a former lawmaker from Kunduz province and friend of Rabbani.

"Then his turban exploded," Aimaq said. The blast broke windows in Rabbani's home and shook nearby houses.

As the leader of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, Rabbani sought a political deal with the Taliban ? with U.S. blessing ? and he will be hard to replace soon. His death could unleash a well of resentment among some senior Northern Alliance members, who accuse Karzai of colluding with the Taliban.

Already Afghanistan's ethnic minorities have begun to rearm in the face of negotiations with the Taliban, who are mostly ethnic Pashtuns, as is Karzai. Rabbani's killing is likely to accelerate that process and lay the foundation for a possible civil war once U.S. combat troops leave the country or take on support roles by the end of 2014.

In Kandahar province, the birthplace of the Taliban movement, officials worried that the assassination would dampen peace efforts.

"It is a great loss not only to the peace program, but for this nation as well," said Atta Mohammad, who heads up reconciliation efforts in the province. "This bombing will have a big impact on the peace program for some time."

President Barack Obama said the killing will not deter the U.S. and Afghanistan from helping that country's people live freely. He said the former president's death is tragic because he was a man who cared deeply about Afghanistan. Obama commented at the start of a meeting in New York with Karzai.

'We have to continue'
Shukria Barakzai, a lawmaker from Kabul, was visibly shaken as she stood outside Rabbani's house in the Wazir Akbar Khan area of the city, near the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters.

"We don't want the whole peace process to get stuck," she said. "We have to continue, we have to."

PhotoBlog: Slain Afghan leader's storied career

Rabbani, who was about 70 years old, headed the country's High Peace Council, set up by the Afghan government to work toward a political solution to the decade-long war. It had made little headway since it was formed a year ago, but it was backed by many in the international community as an important first step toward a settlement.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Rabbani had played a key role in the peace process.

"He was a respected former president of Afghanistan and played a vital role as the chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council," Cameron said. "He will be sorely missed but the work of the Peace Council will go on. We remain determined to see Afghanistan prosper."

Rabbani was president from 1992-1996, heading the Afghan government that preceded the Taliban rule. After he was driven from Kabul in 1996, he became the nominal head of the Northern Alliance, mostly minority Tajiks and Uzbeks, who swept to power in Kabul as a U.S.-led invasion toppled the Taliban regime in late 2001. Rabbani headed the Jamiat-e-Islami political party.

"We lost our leader. We lost our leader," Habibullah, a close friend of Rabbani's, said as he stood crying outside a hospital.

Karzai's adviser Mohammad Masoom Stanekzai was wounded in the attack. A relative who answered Stanekzai's phone said that the wounds did not appear to be life-threatening, but that Stanekzai was in the hospital. The relative declined to give his name because of the sensitivity of the situation. Also wounded were council member Rahmatullah Wahidyar, who had brought the supposed peace envoy to Rabbani's house, and two of Rabbani's staffers.

Stanekzai is a top official with the High Peace Council and the head of a reintegration program for mid- and lower-level Taliban back into Afghan society. The program has so far managed to reintegrate only about 2,000 of the estimated 25,000-40,000 insurgents in Afghanistan.

Reintegration was the other half of reconciliation, which aims to broker a peace deal with the senior Taliban leadership.

'Extreme anger and shock'
Last week, Rabbani led a conference of provincial governors and officials who met in the southern city of Kandahar to develop policies for reintegrating insurgents who want to give up the fight. At the conference, he urged those in the provinces to counter insurgent propaganda claiming that international forces were invaders in Afghanistan.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Yusuf Reza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the assassination. They conveyed their "extreme anger and shock" to the Afghan government over the killing, according to a statement released by the Pakistan government.

Taliban factions based in northwest Pakistan and allegedly supported by elements of the Pakistani security forces have been blamed by Afghan and U.S. authorities for high-profile attacks in Afghanistan, especially in Kabul, over the past three years.

Barakzai said that residents of Kabul were tired of the constant attacks in the city, including a 20-hour assault against the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul that finally ended Sept. 14. That attack killed 16 Afghans ? five police officers and 11 civilians, more than half of them children. No one at the embassy or NATO was killed.

"Every single week we have such an attack," she said.

U.S. and Afghan officials have blamed the Pakistan-based Haqqani network for carrying out that attack and others in the capital and openly stated that the insurgent group has ties to the Pakistani government ? a rare public shot at the role Afghanistan's neighbor to the east plays in bolstering the insurgency.

Abdullah Abdullah, a Tajik leader who lost to Karzai in the 2009 presidential election, said Rabbani's death was significant.

"He was a jihadi leader. From the beginning to the end of his life he did his best to bring peace and stability to this country, and it is a big loss for all Afghan people," Abdullah said.

'They are trying to kill us'
Abdullah, who has been critical of Karzai's attempts to reconcile with the Taliban, said "we should recognize and know our enemy from lower ranks up to the top officials of the country because by any means, by any way, they are trying to kill us and eliminate all high-ranking officials and jihadi leaders."

The Taliban have been targeting senior officials in the government and close associates of Karzai.

On July 27, an insurgent with a bomb under his turban killed the mayor of Kandahar, Ghulam Haider Hamidi. Five days earlier, a close associate gunned down Karzai's powerful half brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, at his home in Kandahar. During Karzai's funeral a turban bomber killed a prominent cleric. The killings prompted Karzai to urge Afghan religious leaders to condemn the use of turban bombs.

That same month, Karzai's inner circle suffered another hit when gunmen in Kabul killed Jan Mohammad Khan, a presidential adviser on tribal issues and a former governor of Uruzgan province, which is also in the south.

On May 28, a suicide bomber infiltrated a high-level meeting in Taloqan, Takhar province, killing northern Afghanistan's top police commander, Gen. Mohammed Daoud, provincial police chief Shah Jehan Noori and two German soldiers. He also seriously wounded the German NATO commander in northern Afghanistan, Maj. Gen. Markus Kneip.

Rocco Staino: Ten Books About Censorship for Kids & Teens

The annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment, Banned Book Week is September 24th -- October 1st. Each year the list of frequently challenged books is highlighted and this year the American Library Association is encouraging people to participate in a Virtual Read-Out.

Despite the high visibility of the event, there are few stories for kids and young adults with censorship as the theme. To help celebrate Banned Book Week I have compiled a list of 10 books that deal with censorship in various areas.

Most of the books in the list date back to the 1980s & '90s with several of them out-of-print. Although there may be a dearth of books on the topic, I am happy to say that First Second Books has recently published Americus, a graphic novel, about taking a stand on censorship. The best is that is also available online at saveapathea.com just in time for Banned Book Week.

Although author Ray Bradbury has been quoted stating that Fahrenheit 451 (Ballentine, 1953) was not about censorship, the dystopian novel is set in a society where reading is banned and books are burned. This book is found in many high school curricula and is a good starting point for discussion.

Conference Celebrates International Freelancers Day Sept. 23 ...

International Freelancers Day is a global initiative to celebrate independent workers and the tremendous impact they have on our economic growth. The movement was founded by three long-term freelancers?Steve Slaunwhite, Pete Savage and Ed Gandia?who are experts in the freelance market, making the transition into self-employment, and building a profitable and enjoyable solo business.

International Freelancers Day will be celebrated on Friday, September 23 with a free, online video conference that is expected to connect tens of thousands of independent workers and other viewers from all over the globe. The conference will start at 10 am EST and run through 6:30 pm.

Gandia, Savage, Slaunwhite, and 14 other authors and thought leaders will present sessions on topics such as pricing, attracting clients, working more productively, outsourcing administrative tasks, promoting yourself, and growing your business. The goal of the conference is to offer strategies that can help take your ?business of one? to the next level.

?With many economists and thought leaders heralding the arrival of the ?freelance economy,? there?s never been a better time to celebrate freelancers and solo professionals the world over,? says Ed Gandia, co-author of ?The Wealthy Freelancer.?

A record number of professionals are currently pursuing freelance work ? either by necessity or simply because they want to. According U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates, one-third of the workforce is now self-employed or freelance. As a growing portion of the labor force continues to shift in this direction (a 10% year-to-date increase, according to SurePayroll?s Small Business Scorecard Review in July) many of these professionals are now seeking better ways to not just survive ? but to thrive ? in the new ?gig economy.?

Register for the free conference at: http://www.internationalfreelancersday.com

2011 Freelance Industry Report

Earlier this month, Ed Gandia released the ?2011 Freelance Industry Report: Data and Analysis of Freelancer Demographics, Earnings, Habits, and Attitudes.? The report presents data from more than 1200 freelancers who responded to a survey conducted through Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail during a nine-day period in August, 2011.

Self-employed individuals from 37 different fields responded to Gandia?s survey. The report tabulated statistics and findings from the top 10 fields represented among the respondents:

  • Writer (18% of respondents)
  • Copywriter (12%)
  • Designer (11%)
  • Translator (9%)
  • Web developer (7%)
  • Editor/copy editor (6%)
  • Marketing professional (4%)
  • Business consultant (4%)
  • Software developer (3%)
  • Virtual assistant (2%)

2011 Freelance Industry Report by Ed GandiaOther types of freelancers who responded to the survey included bloggers, illustrators, photographers, video editors, authors, SEO specialists/consultants, fashion designers, videographers, accountants, engineers, bookkeepers, and social-media consultants.

The report includes 70 charts that provide insight such as:

  • The biggest challenges freelancers face and how those challenges differ by profession, location, experience and other factors.
  • Attitudes toward freelancing, the economy?s impact on freelance work, and freelancers? business outlook for the next 12 months.
  • Income trends, hourly rates, billable time, and how different freelancers price their services.
  • Lifestyle choices, including average hours worked, the importance of free time and flexibility, and attitudes toward re-entering the traditional workforce.
  • How freelancers attract clients today, how much time they spend promoting their services and what marketing strategies they?re planning to implement over the next year.

One major finding?is that ?Professionals who are freelancing as a result of a layoff or being downsized are more likely to earn less as a freelancer than peers who planned their way to self-employment. However, 80% of these ?accidental? freelancers are much happier now than they were as employees.?

(AP) ? Would you trust UBS with your money now?

As regulators join the Swiss bank in scrambling to figure out how a single suspect could have racked up as much as $2 billion worth of rotten bets over three years, analysts and politicians say the catastrophic losses reinforce the case for divorcing retail banks from their investment arms.

In Britain, plans to separate ? or "ring fence" ? the everyday banking familiar to most people such as deposits, mortgages, and loans from the complex and potentially dangerous investment trading have been on the cards for months.

The plans were approved by a government-appointed commission a few days ago, and backers of the ring-fencing idea say that, in a way, the arrest of 31-year-old trader Kweku Adoboli on charges of fraud and false accounting could not have come at a better time.

British Treasury chief George Osborne told Britain's Sky News television that the "shocking case" uncovered at the Swiss bank was as strong an argument as any for following the recommendations made by the commission, chaired by John Vickers, a former chief economist of the Bank of England.

"If you ever wanted a better example of why the kinds of ideas that John Vickers was putting forward were right for Britain, look at what happened at UBS just a few days later," Osborne told the broadcaster.

Vickers' 363-page report argued that Britain's retail banks should be split off by 2019 to reduce the risks of taxpayers having to bear the cost of any future bailouts, saying that "the risks inevitably associated with banking have to sit somewhere, and it should not be with taxpayers."

The commission recommended that retail banks should be "legally, economically and operationally separate" from the parent companies, and should have "distinct governance arrangements, and should have different cultures."

The report got a mixed reception earlier this week before Adoboli's arrest. Some welcomed the report as a way of insulating the bailout-weary public from high-risk financial maneuvers derided as "casino banking." But the British Bankers' Association, the industry's main lobby group, sounded a cautious note, saying the planned reforms "need to be carefully analyzed and compared with those agreed internationally."

Ian Gordon, an analyst at Evolution Securities, spoke for others in the finance community when he dismissed the recommendations as "unwelcome and unhelpful."

But opposition to Vickers' plan is likely to be tougher now, analysts say, particularly if it is confirmed that Adoboli gambled away $2 billion without UBS even realizing the money was gone.

"This will confirm any existing prejudices about 'casino' banking and provide increased support for retail ring fencing or even tougher solutions," Citigroup analyst Ronit Ghose was quoted as saying by the Financial Times.

As politicians and the public weighed the implications of Adoboli's arrest, friends of the alleged rogue trader voiced disbelief.

Chrissie Wunna described her former schoolmate to The Associated Press as "one of the kindest, sweetest, gentlemen you'd ever want to meet." The 30-year-old model said in an email that Adoboli "really was a 'goody-goody' and highly regarded by us all."

She said she and her friends were "more than shocked" at the news that he had been detained.

One person who wasn't surprised at the news was Nick Leeson, the trader who brought down British bank Barings in 1995 after making around $1.4 billion in losses on unauthorized trades. In a series of tweets, Leeson suggested that banks' recklessness made these kinds of disasters inevitable.

"Financial innovation is all the banks care about," he said. "Controls are for lesser mortals."

Adoboli has yet to enter a plea. His next appearance in court is Thursday.

(AP) ? Tony Romo felt sick to his stomach. It hurt to breathe, let alone bark out the cadence in a hostile road stadium.

Playing with the throbbing pain from a fractured rib, Romo rallied America's Team just as he promised he would.

In a week when Romo vowed to play his best game, he delivered a gutsy comeback that looked so unlikely when he briefly came out from halftime and then returned to the locker room.

Moments after the Cowboys (1-1) announced the quarterback was done for the day, there came No. 9 ready to take charge of the huddle once again.

Romo hit Jesse Holley on a 77-yard completion on the Cowboys' first play of overtime that set up Dan Bailey's winning 19-yard field goal 2:53 into the overtime, and Dallas pulled off an improbable 27-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

In one frantic span, Romo emphatically left his mark on the storied Cowboys-49ers rivalry that dates back decades to all those epic matchups in the NFC title game that regularly set up Super Bowl victories by the winner.

"It's got to be one of those things that will follow him through his career. I know what it was here in the locker room at halftime. I know what he had to do to get back on the field," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.

"I know what he had to do before (painkillers) took hold to relieve him from his pain. But, boy, did he come back. That was inspirational."

Romo emerged from the locker room after the second-half kickoff and walked briefly into the huddle as Jon Kitna returned to the sideline, then Romo immediately came off under doctor's orders and headed back to the locker room.

Back on the sideline late in the third quarter, Romo tapped Jason Garrett on the shoulder and told the coach to put him back in the game.

"Eventually, what was convincing was, 'At some point I'm going to play with this thing, so why not now?'" Garrett said, quoting Romo. "It's about a quarterback but it's really about a football player and a competitor. And Tony is that. One of the best competitors I've ever been around."

This was an exact reverse of what happened a week earlier: a 27-24 road loss to the Jets after Dallas blew a late 14-point lead and watched New York kick the winning field goal. Romo's late interception contributed to that Week 1 collapse. Going on a few hours of sleep, he was back to work early Monday morning preparing for the 49ers.

Bailey kicked a tying 48-yard field goal Sunday as time expired in regulation after missing an early 21-yard attempt. That delighted the large contingent ? close to one-third ? of Cowboys fans in Candlestick Park.

Romo completed five of six passes on the tying drive, connecting on consecutive throws to Holley before finding him again in OT.

"Ribs are tough," Romo said. "It's just hard to breathe, and talk really. You have to talk loud, especially on the road."

Romo wasn't the only one playing hurt, either. Running back Felix Jones separated his shoulder early in the game, Jerry Jones said.

Miles Austin made three touchdown receptions among his nine catches for 143 yards, leaping over a defender and diving into the end zone to pull Dallas within 24-21 with 6:55 to play. Austin later hurt his hamstring.

Jones won't need to defend Romo after this one. He grimaced and limped. He needed help from a lineman to stand up as the vicious hits kept coming.

Romo completed 20 of 33 passes for 345 yards and Kitna found Austin for a 5-yard TD, but also threw two interceptions during his brief appearance. As Romo's teammates celebrated, cheered and hugged, he slowly made his way to midfield for postgame handshakes.

Romo returned for the last series of the third quarter, the final 15 minutes and OT. He didn't give Garrett much chance to say no.

"I just told him I was good to go. I think he asked some of the guys," Romo said. "I didn't give him too much of a chance. I just ran on the field."

The 49ers (1-1) were trying to move to 2-0 under new coach Jim Harbaugh after a 33-17 victory over defending NFC West champion Seattle last week.

Alex Smith threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns, including a 29-yard strike to Delanie Walker in the third quarter. Smith found himself in the familiar predicament of getting hit. He was sacked six times as San Francisco's offensive line often failed to protect him or give him ample time in the pocket to be effective.

Frank Gore ran for a 1-yard score and Kyle Williams had a 12-yard touchdown catch as San Francisco went ahead 14-0.

Dallas had a final chance in regulation, getting the ball back with 4:03 to play starting from its own 26.

Romo, in the shotgun as he'd been most of the day, delivered on third-and-6 from the 43 with a 7-yard completion to Austin. They connected on another 7-yard gain the next play.

After Jones this week called Romo's performance against the Jets "outstanding," Romo made all the right calls in crunch time.

He played through multiple hits in the first half, when he threw a late 53-yard touchdown pass to Austin to bring Dallas within 14-7. The QB came up slowly after being clobbered on a blindside cornerback blitz by Carlos Rogers as he was throwing in the second quarter.

Romo looked to be headed for another tough day.

The Cowboys came up short on a 76-yard drive over the opening 7? minutes after Bailey missed wide right on his 21-yard field goal attempt. Then, it was three straight three-and-outs.

When it mattered, Romo came through.

"He understands that all eyes are on him," said safety Donte Whitner, beat on the deep throw in OT.

"They expect him to lead them to the playoffs and ultimately a championship. For a guy like that, after the things that happened last week, you expected him to come back into the football game."

Notes: It was the first overtime game of the season. ... The 49ers were outgained in total yards 472-206. ... Dallas' DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher each had two sacks. ... San Francisco's Braylon Edwards limped off with a right knee injury after making a 21-yard catch in the first quarter. Harbaugh had no update afterward.
