Norwayne youngsters can close out their winter break activities at Winterfest Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Dorsey Community Center.
?We had about 20 people last year. We expect a greater turnout ? 100 people ? after the response we had to Octoberfest,? said Henry Johnson, who chairs the Norwayne Community Citizens Council which sponsors the event. ?We ran out of pumpkins in the first hour.?
Winterfest activities will include storytelling, crafts, face painting and a clown making balloon animals.
Scheduled for noon to 2 p.m., the free event will feature hot dogs and also soup served by Westland Mayor William Wild, joined by former mayors Charles Pickering and Thomas Taylor. Pickering, who has studied culinary arts, will be making the soups ? potato and a second choice.
?We will also have gift packs for the kids with school supplies for when the kids go back to school, toothbrushes, hot chocolate and thermal mugs,? said Johnson.
While youngsters are doing activities, parents are invited to attend a workshop on programs offered by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Services Agency.
?It will be an introduction to their services so parents can sign up that day,? said Johnson.
No advance registration is required for Winterfest. The Dorsey Center is located on Dorsey just east of Venoy.
