Information Engineering | Certification Intelligence ...

Info engineering news and technical data pertaining to certification intelligence for exam education is the major goal of this write-up. Numerous individuals do not know the distinction amongst pc instruction and certification exam education. I would like to inform everybody what the differences are. Pc training is classroom education with scheduled courses or online coaching about the profession field pertaining to data technology. Let me explain! You may want to turn out to be a Server Administrator. To start with you will need some education someplace in order to be knowledgeable about the topic and maybe obtain a 2 or 4-year degree or obtain some on-line instruction with a certified instructor. You might just want to take a handful of courses and obtain a certificate in this field. This would be considered laptop or computer coaching.

Info technologies certification intelligence on exam instruction is what you need in order to be fully prepared to pass your certification exam. Right after laptop or computer education you may possibly have a degree or a certificate but you nonetheless do not have a certification that is recognized by Microsoft, CIW and CompTia or any other. If you have computer training that qualifies you to be a Server Administrator then you will want to get certified in Microsoft, CIW or CISCO. Certification exam coaching concentrates on preparing you to pass your certification exam. An IT Certification exam is as opposed to any other exam that you have had in college or school. There are two really essential issues to contemplate when preparing for a certification exam. They are the appropriate study method and possessing relevant material that pertains to the actual exam that is up to date with the existing marketplace.

There are only a handful of areas on the internet that offer you Certification exam coaching. The purpose I wrote this article is to offer news and details about the finest resources on certification exam coaching. There are several students of details engineering that want this info due to the fact they are significant about passing their certification exam on the very first try. This article is not about selling but about assisting those who are not informed about Certification exam training.
microsoft certification training
Another goal of this write-up is education regarding info technology certification. There are many colleges and on the web coaching about information technologies that will prepare you for a certain subject or field but there are but a handful of places exactly where you can locate data technology certification intelligence on exam instruction.
microsoft certification training
Say you want to turn out to be a Computer Technician and you study at a college or receive on the internet education so that you are knowledgeable about that field and get a diploma or certificate in that area but you still are not certified till you take a certification exam. Even following graduation you will require to schedule an IT certification exam with prometric or pearsonvue in order to be certified in the field that you want.

How a lot of locations do you know exactly where you can get instruction on how to pass your data technology certification exam. Exam coaching is not the exact same as laptop or computer training. You will need to have information of how to study for your certification exam and to know the proper study methods because an IT exam is not the same as the exams in school. You will also want to know exactly where to get updated material about your certification exam due to the fact if you are studying material that is outdated then you will not pass your certification exam. Certification exam training is crucial if you program on passing your certification exam the very first time so you can avoid 2nd and 3rd exam charges.

Some men and women could currently be working on the job in the profession that they wish, such as a Server Administrator, Desktop Assistance Technician or a Computer Repair Technician. They may possibly have had prior instruction prior to employment but have in no way acquired a certification. They probably know their job and are extremely knowledgeable about their perform and field but need to have a certification since their employer requires it. They do not need to have any computer education. They only need Certification exam instruction so they can pass their certification exam. I hope you get the image now. New self-assembling particles offer great promise for optical materials and ceramics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Scientists have created new kinds of particles, 1/100th the diameter of a human hair, that spontaneously assemble themselves into structures resembling molecules made from atoms. These new particles come together, or "self-assemble," to form structures in patterns that were previously impossible to make and hold promise for manufacturing advanced optical materials and ceramics.

The method, described in the latest issue of the journal Nature, was developed by a team of chemists, chemical engineers, and physicists at New York University (NYU), the Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, the Harvard Department of Physics, and Dow Chemical Company.

The method is centered on enhancing the architecture of colloids -- small particles suspended within a fluid medium. Colloidal dispersions are composed of such everyday items as paint, milk, gelatin, glass, and porcelain, but their potential to create new materials remains largely untapped.

Previously, scientists had succeeded in building rudimentary structures from colloids. But the ability use colloids to design and assemble complex 3-dimensional structures, which are vital to the design of advanced optical materials, has been limited. This is, in part, because colloids lack directional bonds, which are necessary to control particle self-assembly as well as to enhance complexity while maintaining the structural integrity of these creations. Such assemblies serve as the building blocks of the natural world -- e.g., atoms and molecules -- but they are rare in the colloidal domain.

"What this method aimed to do was to use nature's properties for atoms and apply them to the colloidal world," explained NYU chemistry professor Marcus Weck, one of the study's coauthors.

"Chemists have a whole periodic table of atoms to choose from when they synthesize molecules and crystals," added coauthor Vinothan Manoharan, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Physics at Harvard. "We wanted to develop a similar 'construction set' for making larger-scale molecules and crystals."

In developing colloids with such properties, the researchers engineered chemical "patches" that can form directional bonds, thus allowing for the assembly of 3-dimensional "lattices" with only a few connections between particles, an important design element for many advanced materials. Without directional bonding, such structures are unstable.

The trick was establishing bonding capabilities on the patches. The scientists did so by using single strands of DNA, which scientists at NYU and elsewhere have previously employed to organize small particles. In the method described in Nature, these strands of DNA served as "sticky ends" to which particle patches could adhere.

"What this means is we can make particles that attach only at the patches, and then we can program them so only specific kinds of particles attach at those patches," said coauthor and NYU physics professor David Pine. "This gives us tremendous flexibility to design 3-dimensional structures."

The researchers added that the specificity of DNA interactions between patches means that colloids with different properties, such as size, color, chemical functionality, or electrical conductivity, could lead to the production of new materials. These potentially include 3-dimensional electrically wired networks or photonic crystals to enhance the optical displays of a range of consumer products and to improve the speed of computer chips.

Additional coauthors included Yufeng Wang (NYU), Yu Wang (NYU), Dana R. Breed (Dow Chemical Co.), Lang Feng (NYU), and Andrew D. Hollingsworth (NYU).

Key work was performed at NYU's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory supported by the National Science Foundation.

The research was also supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (MR-0820341, ChE-0911460, DMR-0923251).

Kate Moss opens up about modeling misery

NEW YORK (Reuters) - If you hate having your picture taken, you're in good company - British supermodel Kate Moss does as well.

"I'm terrible at a snapshot. Terrible. I blink all the time. I've got facial Tourette's," she told Vanity Fair in the December issue, out on Wednesday.

Moss, who has graced countless magazine covers and was emblematic of the waif look popular in the 1990s, added "Unless I'm working and in that zone, I'm not very good at pictures."

Moss, 38, opened up about her years spent before the camera, including now-legendary shoots that left her anxious, demoralized, and hungry.

Among her regrets is a 1992 Calvin Klein session that helped launched Moss' career.

She recalled the shoot, at age 17 or 18, with Mark Wahlberg (then going by his rapper name, Marky Mark) and photographer Herb Ritts.

"I had a nervous breakdown," she said. "It (the job) didn't feel like me at all. I felt really bad about straddling this buff guy. I didn't like it. I couldn't get out of bed for two weeks. I thought I was going to die."

"It was just anxiety," she added. "Nobody takes care of you mentally. There's a massive pressure to do what you have to do (and) I was really little ... I didn't like it. But it was work, and I had to do it."

When she was even younger, she posed nude for The Face - another regret.

"I see a 16-year-old now, and to ask her to take her clothes off would feel really weird. But they were like, 'If you don't do it, then we're not going to book you again.' So I'd lock myself in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it."

Moss, who became associated with the "heroin chic" look after her early shoots, said "I had never even taken heroin - it was nothing to do with me at all."

"I was thin," she conceded. "But that's because I was doing shows, working really hard ... You'd get home from work and there was no food. You'd get to work in the morning, there was no food ... You don't get fed."

Moss has kind words for her time with Johnny Depp in the mid-1990s, when she said she felt taken care of. After their break-up in 1998, "I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying."

Now, she says, her years of partying and high living have ebbed. She married guitarist Jamie Hince in 2011 after a four-year romance. "I don't real?ly go to clubs anymore. I'm actually quite settled."

"Living in Highgate (in London) with my dog and my husband and my daughter! I'm not a hell-raiser."

Still, she added, "Don't burst the bubble. Behind closed doors, for sure I'm a hell-raiser."

Crazy Person - Small Business Branding

The Crazy person is one of the arcane majors of the gypsy tarot. When the Crazy person leaves exposed, generally, a figure is considered positive. It fulfills a fundamental roll within the mallet of the tarot, in the same way that the zero in the mathematical one. Without the zero notion any possibility would not exist of realising calculations, and of equal way, without the transcendental force of the Crazy person, the vital spark of the energy of the tarot would not exist. Without doubts, he is arcane a disquieting one. All we are a little crazy, and we make things that do not seem to have logical, and of that we are not very safe of its result. The Crazy person is an innocent personage, is like a boy, has all the potentialities, all the possibilities of realising a future favorable.

Nevertheless, that potentiality not yet has been realised. It depends on many factors: of the luck, of its history and the resources on which it counts. The Crazy person is, then, an ambiguous letter, can be transformed into a virtuous person, as much as in somebody despicable one. The arcane one expresses the good beginning of something project, relation, process, but it does not guarantee that the final result is satisfactory. The Crazy person stimulates to us to leave the pre-established molds, to change our schemes of thought, to leave the mental box in which sometimes we are locked up. The Crazy person invites to believe to us in our own possibilities, to bet by the new thing: a new love, a new use, a new way. But, in the same way that when one begins a trip, does not know how it will finish, the Crazy person guarantees either that the triumph is the destination. The Crazy person is the light, brings the light to everything what touches.

But, of equal way that the intense light, can blind. A boy can give freshness image, of which he does not have prejudices, of which it loves with his heart, without reserves. But also it can be a capricious boy, who does not listen to the voice of the experience, and does not learn of his errors, exactly, because to the so young being, it does not have history of which to learn. In the Gypsy Tarot, the Crazy person is a letter favorable, but he asks to us that we take the collections necessary to ensure the success to us. All we have fallen sometimes when learning to walk. It is part inevitable of the process of the any learning: failing and returning to try it.

Aquaculture industry looks to high seas opportunities | ACG - The ...

30 Oct 2012

Posted by admin

The offshore aquaculture industry has requested that United Nations? FAO conduct an assessment of the access and operational frameworks for open ocean mariculture in the high seas, and make recommendations on how to encourage work toward mariculture in waters beyond any one nation?s EEZs.

A statement to this effect was drafted at The Offshore Mariculture Conference, held in Izmir, Turkey recently and the Turkish government offered to formally convey the request to FAO, Offshore Mariculture and fishupdate.com said.

The statement adopted at the conclusion of the conference drew from a number of preceding declarations ? including the 2010 Global Conference on Aquaculture, the Phuket Consensus of 2010, and the Colombo Declaration of 2011, all of which have emphasized the critical role for aquaculture in feeding the world, stimulating economic development, providing employment and reducing existing negative impacts on the marine environment.

Most recently, the Bremerhaven Declaration of 2012 spoke specifically of the need for increased research, development, investment and policy frameworks for open ocean aquaculture. Read more ?

(AP) ? Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph winds Monday night and hurled an unprecedented 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City, flooding its tunnels, subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street. At least 16 U.S. deaths were blamed on the storm, which brought the presidential campaign to a halt a week before Election Day.

For New York City at least, Sandy was not the dayslong onslaught many had feared, and the wind and rain that sent water sloshing into Manhattan from three sides began dying down within hours.

Still, the power was out for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and an estimated 6.2 million people altogether across the East. The full extent of the storm's damage across the region was unclear, and unlikely to be known until daybreak.

Stock trading will be closed in the U.S. for a second day Tuesday ? the first time the New York Stock Exchange will be closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888, when a blizzard struck the city.

Heavy rain and further flooding remain major threats for the next couple of days as the storm makes its way into Pennsylvania and up into New York State. The center of the storm was just outside Philadelphia near midnight, and its winds were down to 75 mph, just barely hurricane strength.

"It was nerve-racking for a while, before the storm hit. Everything was rattling," said Don Schweikert, who owns a bed-and-breakfast in Cape May, N.J., near where Sandy roared ashore. "I don't see anything wrong, but I won't see everything until morning."

As the storm closed in, it converged with a cold-weather system that turned it into a superstorm, a monstrous hybrid consisting not only of rain and high wind but snow in West Virginia and other mountainous areas inland.

It smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor ? Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston ? with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph.

Just before Sandy reached land, forecasters stripped it of hurricane status, but the distinction was purely technical, based on its shape and internal temperature. It still packed hurricane-force wind, and forecasters were careful to say it was still dangerous to the tens of millions in its path.

Sandy made landfall at 8 p.m. near Atlantic City, which was already mostly under water and saw an old, 50-foot piece of its world-famous Boardwalk washed away earlier in the day.

Authorities reported a record surge 13 feet high at the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan, from the storm and high tide combined.

In an attempt to lessen damage from saltwater to the subway system and the electrical network beneath the city's financial district, New York City's main utility cut power to about 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan. But a far wider swath of the city was hit with blackouts caused by flooding and transformer explosions.

About 670,000 customers were without power late Monday in the city and suburban Westchester County.

"This will be one for the record books," said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operations at ConEdison. "This will be the largest storm-related outage in our history."

New York's transit agency said water surged into two major commuter tunnels, the Queens Midtown and the Brooklyn-Battery, and it cut power to some subway tunnels in lower Manhattan after water flowed into the stations and onto the tracks.

The subway system was shut down Sunday night, and the stock markets never opened Monday and are likely to be closed Tuesday as well. Schools were closed and Broadway theaters were dark.

"We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "This is a once-in-a-long-time storm."

More than 200 patients ? including 20 infants from neonatal intensive care ? were moved from New York University's Tisch Hospital after its power went out and a backup generator failed. The patients, some on respirators operating on battery power, were taken to other hospitals.

A construction crane atop a luxury high-rise collapsed in the high winds and dangled precariously 74 floors above the street. Forecasters said the wind at the top the building may have been close to 95 mph.

The facade of a four-story building in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood crumbled and collapsed, leaving the lights, couches, cabinets and desks inside visible from the street. No one was hurt.

As the storm approached the Northeast over the weekend, airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights in the region.

Storm damage was projected at $10 billion to $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

Sixteen deaths were reported in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Some of the victims were killed by falling trees. At least one death was blamed on the storm in Canada.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney canceled their campaign appearances at the very height of the race, with just over a week to go before Election Day. The president pledged the government's help and made a direct plea from the White House to those in the storm's path.

"When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate," he said. "Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given, because this is a powerful storm."

Sandy, which killed 69 people in the Caribbean before making its way up the Atlantic, began to hook left at midday toward the New Jersey coast.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said people were stranded in Atlantic City, which sits on a barrier island. He accused the mayor of allowing them to stay there. With the hurricane roaring through, Christie warned it was no longer safe for rescuers, and advised people who didn't evacuate the coast to "hunker down" until morning.

While the hurricane's 90 mph winds registered as only a Category 1 on a scale of five, it packed "astoundingly low" barometric pressure, giving it terrific energy to push water inland, said Kerry Emanuel, a professor of meteorology at MIT.

And the New York metropolitan area apparently got the worst of it, because it was on the dangerous northeastern wall of the storm.

"We are looking at the highest storm surges ever recorded" in the Northeast, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for Weather Underground, a private forecasting service. "The energy of the storm surge is off the charts, basically."

Hours before landfall, there was graphic evidence of the storm's power.

Off North Carolina, a replica of the 18th-century sailing ship HMS Bounty that was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" went down in the storm, and 14 crew members were rescued by helicopter from rubber lifeboats bobbing in 18-foot seas. Another crew member was found hours afterward but was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The captain was missing.

At Cape May, water sloshed over the seawall, and it punched through dunes in other seaside communities.

"When I think about how much water is already in the streets, and how much more is going to come with high tide tonight, this is going to be devastating," said Bob McDevitt, president of the main Atlantic City casino workers union. "I think this is going to be a really bad situation tonight."

In Maryland, at least 100 feet of a fishing pier at the beach resort of Ocean City was destroyed.

At least half a million people along the East Coast had been ordered to evacuate, including 375,000 from low-lying parts of New York City.

Sheila Gladden left her home in Philadelphia's flood-prone Eastwick neighborhood, which took on 5? feet of water during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and headed for a hotel.

"I'm not going through this again," she said.

Those who stayed behind had few ways to get out.

Not only was the New York subway shut down, but the Holland Tunnel connecting New York to New Jersey was closed, as was a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and several other spans were closed because of high winds.

Diabetes Weight LossIf you are obese and have type II diabetes, then it is important to drop a few pounds, as it will not only lower the blood sugar level, but also improves your overall health. However, before starting your diabetes weight loss program, it is important to consult your doctor and work closely with him. This is because while you are on a diet, insulin, medications and blood sugar need special attention.

A study has found that a right combination of exercise and diet cuts down the possibility of developing diabetes in people by almost 58%. Even by reducing 5% ? 10% of the weight there is a significant decrease in the blood sugar.

Besides lowering the blood sugar, it also improves the cholesterol levels, reduces blood pressure and stress on feet, ankles, knees and hips. Also, you will have more energy, and your breathing and moving around will become much easier.

Tips for Diabetes Weight Loss

Watch your Blood Sugar Level

Skipping meals can affect the blood sugar levels in your body. Therefore, do not try any weight loss plans on your own, especially if you are diabetic. You need the help of a good nutritionist and doctor for safe weight loss.

Right Balance

It is quite risky if your blood sugar fluctuates while dieting. It is important to have control on your glucose while losing weight. Experts suggest cutting down about 500 calories in a day, and this is safe for a person with diabetes.

Diabetic Weight Loss Program

Also, it is essential to cut calories across a range of components that includes fat, carbohydrates and protein. A diabetic person must maintain the right ratio of proteins, fat and carbs. About 10 ? 15 percent of protein, 30 percent of fat and 50 ? 55 percent of carbs is an ideal ratio.

Watch for Carbohydrates in the Weight Loss Program

Carbs have a great impact on the blood sugar levels. This is because they are broken into sugar form early during digestion. Consuming complex carbs present in food items like vegetables and whole-grain bread is good, as they are slowly absorbed in the bloodstream and cuts down the danger of high blood sugar.

Cutting down a lot of carbs is one of the common strategies followed while dieting. However, this can be quite dangerous for a diabetic person.

When the body does not have enough quantity of carbs to burn the fuel, the metabolism changes to ketosis and in this process fat is burned. You will eat less, as you will feel less hungry. However, long term ketosis could lead to a lot of health problems.

 Weight Loss Program

The delivery of oxygen to the tissues decreases during the process of ketosis, which puts pressure on liver, heart, kidneys and eyes. Therefore, high-protein and low-carb diet such as Atkins is not safe for those with diabetes. Diabetics have to follow a balanced diet, so that their body can handle the nutrients well without going through ketosis.

Special Challenges

Losing weight is quite challenging, especially for those who inject insulin, as they have to eat whenever they have low levels of blood sugar. Reducing the intake of calories, preventing overmedication and eating to correct the low blood sugar is indeed a challenging task. Both high as well as low blood sugar is a cause for concern.

Low Blood Sugar

This occurs when the insulin amount in the body is much higher than the body needs. In the initial stages, it causes shakiness, dizziness and confusion. In the later stages, it causes fainting and even coma. This is common in people, who lose weight, as weight loss and cutting calories can affect the blood sugar levels. You will be risking yourself, if the pills or insulin dosage is not matched to the new levels of blood sugar in the body.

High Blood Sugar

Also known as hyperglycemia is developed, when the level of insulin is too low in the body and it cannot control the blood sugar. This occurs, when people on the sugar-lowering medications or insulin do not take the right dosage or follow appropriate diet.

Effects of Exercise

Your blood sugar is balanced, when you exercise regularly. Also, you need not cut down many calories, when you exercise, but you need to keep in mind that each type of exercise regime affects the blood sugar in a different way. Treadmill workout or running and aerobic exercise will lower the blood sugar immediately.

Prolonged strenuous exercise or weight lifting affects the blood sugar many hours later and this poses a problem, especially while driving. Therefore, you need to check the blood sugar levels prior to driving and it would be a great idea to take snacks like soda, juice, crackers or fruit with you.

Losing weight using diet control and physical exercise is the best option and with persevere it will definitely have a positive effect in a majority of diabetics.

Hidden Meanings in Children's Fairy Tales | World of Psychology

Hidden Meanings in Children's Fairy TalesCinderella is mistreated by her wicked stepfamily, which gives her an awfully hard time about going to the ball and meeting her Prince Charming. Dorothy finds herself following a yellow brick road as she journeys to Oz and encounters evil along the way. Alice falls down a rabbit hole into Wonderland, a completely mystical world.

Classic fairy tales are actually not as child-like as we may presume.

While some may take the stories at face value, for the sole purpose of entertainment, other researchers tell us that these are wise stories infused with meaning and symbols.

A printable version of an oral story guide (as retold by Judy Lubin) demonstrates that the tale of Cinderella signifies personal growth and transformation. As Cinderella learns to differentiate between good and bad, her new dress reflects that change, since inner change correlates with outside alteration as well.

Cinderella?s stepmother and stepsisters, who are not physically beautiful, choose not to accept Cinderella due to her outward appearance. ?When they realize that she is about to become powerful in the outside world, they mistakenly attempt to change themselves so that they will look like her on the outside,? the guide stated. ?They deform their feet to match Cinderella?s! But it does them no good, because inner beauty is what counts in this story.?

Psychologist Jonathan Young, who previously worked with renowned mythologist Joseph Campbell, dissects stories and finds symbolism in fairy tales that parallel the adult spirit. Young said Campbell helped him realize that each person stars in a production of their own life story.

Young said the journey in the Wizard of Oz represents the universal quest we all yearn for: one of compassion, courage, wisdom and a sense of home. The flying monkeys and the Wicked Witch symbolize our inner fears. Along with the dark undertones in the Wizard of Oz, tales that feature forests (such as Hansel and Gretel and Snow White) symbolize ?a place that seeks to swallow you up.?

While Young emphasized that Alice in Wonderland illustrates the importance of fantasy, he suggested that The Princess and the Frog King actually conveys the inner workings of relationships. The original story tells of the woman betraying her father?s wishes by refusing to ?repay a frog with her love.? She angrily hurls the creature against the wall. ?It?s a lot like contemporary relationships,? Young notes. ?Many important issues are worked out through argument and conflict.?

Reading up on the various meanings infused in between the lines in these old stories definitely makes me want to re-examine all of them (except the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz). I?ll probably want to pass on being terrified seeing her green face on the television screen.

More Tips For Feeding The Family, Hurricane Edition

Our readers were buzzing with ideas after yesterday's post on keeping the family well-fed during Hurricane Sandy-related power outages. What topped their list of topics? Egg safety, coffee preparedness, and what to do with pantry goods.

So we thought we'd round up some of the best of your suggestions, plus a few new tips, as we plow through Day 2 of the storm.

Sterno-type cooking in 1948. Many people still use these cooking tools today when disaster strikes.

Sterno-type cooking in 1948. Many people still use these cooking tools today when disaster strikes.

AP

Early on yesterday, Salt reader Lari Robling of Philadelphia tweeted her pre-storm priorities: "Grind your coffee beans while you have power. Give that hand can opener a good cleaning ? bacteria thrives in those crevices."

Robling knows hand can openers. She's the brains behind Endangered Recipes, a book and website dedicated to tapping our grandmothers' forgotten recipes, and she works on a healthy food project for member station WHYY called Fit. She tells us storms remind her that in many parts of the world, hauling water and makeshift cooking are the norm.

Many other readers agree that the hand can opener is a storm cook's best friend ? for eating beans, tuna, and evaporated milk right out of the can. Crackers, bread and cold cereal are your pairings with these items right now.

And Robling has more ideas on what to unearth from the pantry:

"I always have buttermilk powder and egg white powder in my pantry. They are shelf stable and good not just for emergencies but for when you just don't feel like going out to the store if a recipe you want to do calls for them. Also, canned evaporated milk in the 5-ounce cans. It substitutes for cream in soups and if you melt some cheese it is a decent cheese sauce and mixed with cooked pasta is a decent mac and cheese substitute."

Of course if you have a gas stove or a gas grill outside and it's safe enough to go out, you can cook just about anything on it, as reader Dave Baldwin noted in the comments yesterday. "You don't have as much control, so you have to raise/lower pots to get the temperature right, but it works. You can even bake, in a Dutch oven, although again you don't have anywhere near the control you would in your nice gas range," he wrote. Just be careful about keeping the cooking area well-ventilated.

Other options readers suggest include sterno cans and chafing dishes, but we'd recommend against cooking raw meat on them. You might want to keep a thermometer handy and remember to ventilate if you're considering breaking them out. And check out the video below of how to set up a sterno and portable stove.

For the Boy Scouts among us, our pals over at Serious Eats did a round up a couple of years back about sternos, butane burners, and survivalist camp stoves. And former Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl tweets that she's using her fireplace to fry eggs this morning.

As your frozen items start defrosting, think soup, many readers tell us. And invite the neighbors over to use up leftovers or have a group cookout, once you can go outside safely.

Whether you get outside or you're stuck inside for awhile, lots of us are going to have to throw out some food after the storm. There's no way around it if the power's off for several hours or days (see this list to keep everything as safe as possible).

But one of the more heartbreaking issues new moms face during power outages like this one that can last for days includes losing frozen breastmilk. Over at the San Diego Breastfeeding Center, they report that breastmilk can stay safe in a full freezer once the power's out for 48 hours, sometimes more, plus they have some helpful tips on storing it longer.

Speaking of longer storage, a few of you weighed in on the eggs issue. In yesterday's post, we listed eggs among the perishables to use up, in addition to milk. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers eggs perishable, folks in other countries sometimes store them in the cupboard.

Anna Vigren reports on the science that shows eggs are pretty disease resistant and that there's no need to store eggs in the fridge unless they're known to have been laid by a hen infected with Salmonella. Cook them thoroughly, in any case.

And if you're still stuck at home with kids and there's power and pantry items aplenty, here's Food 52's list of projects like soft pretzels and peanut butter cookies.

Yammer Unveils Its Enterprise Graph, Helping To ... - The Next Web

At its first-ever user conference, Yammer has announced what it?s calling ?an enhanced? way for businesses to be more social.

At its YamJam 2012 conference, CEO and co-founder David Sacks told the crowd that his company is unveiling its Enterprise Graph ? a new platform that will enable developers and customers to ?seamlessly connect people, conversations, and data across all their business services.?

YamJam is the enterprise social network?s first public event since Microsoft closed its acquisition of the company. Companies that are at this event are looking to see just how enterprise software is being reinvented and can help transform a business.

And there are quite a lot of organizations interested in being at the forefront of this ?transformation? ? currently over 200,000 businesses use its product, including 7-eleven, UNICEF, eBay, Intuit, Ford, Boehringer Ingelheim, and many others. 85% of all Fortune 500 companies leverage the service as well, including four of the largest US companies, three of the top 10 beverage companies, three of the top global gas companies, and three of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies.

With its Enterprise Graph, Yammer is hoping that it will help solve the problem they call ?social network sprawl?: where businesses find that they are interacting with multiple social networks?inside their own company. The company is interested in finding a way to develop a standard to bring everything together and working off the same database. You might think of this as the Open Graph for the enterprise.

If you?re wondering what the Open Graph is or why it sounds so familiar, then you?re not alone. Perhaps the most well-known implementation of the Open Graph belongs to Facebook. By utilizing this language, companies will be able to take advantage of the user?s profile links, updates, and other useful information ? it allows Yammer?s users to develop ways to draw information about more objects than simply people, such as photos, events, relationships between each other, etc. It doesn?t even need to apply to individuals ? it can work for virtual non-human objects between individuals.

Sacks says that Yammer would like to figure out how to make application and businesses more social but also develop a way where humans can interact with any piece of data they?re working with. As part of this new platform, users will be able to take advantage of several new features: embeddable feeds, follows and like buttons, pages, and the app directory.

Yes, Yammer did have many of these features before. What this Enterprise Graph appears to do make data more readily accessible. So with respect to the embeddable feeds, businesses can now insert conversations about ?business data? in context. With pages, you can now follow them and they act similarly to profile pages for individuals and view the page?s activity, followers, and conversations.

Prior to today?s announcement, users had the ability to integrate other business applications into Yammer, starting with the Activity Stream API, which enabled the integration of existing enterprise business applications like Salesforce, Box, and TripIt so that data could be added to the social graph. Additionally, the company made available Yammer Connect, which enables users to port their account ?identities? to their Intranet or other applications (think of it like Facebook Connect for the enterprise); Yammer Embed, a service that allowed you to instantly add Yammer feeds to any business application; and other noted integrations, specifically with Sharepoint, Salesforce, and SAP.

All features within the Enterprise Graph will be available to Yammer?s customers starting today.

Why voters don't care about Mitt Romney's move to the center

The Republican nominee has outraged liberals by re-embracing his "Moderate Mitt" persona. But most of the country is shrugging it off

I was on CNN's Reliable Sources?the other day (watch the video below), when host Howard Kurtz asked me why Mitt Romney has largely "gotten a pass" as he tacks to the political center.?

Of course, in the days leading up to Nov. 6, it's a hot topic. Kurtz's Daily Beast colleague, blogger Andrew Sullivan, told ABC's This Week?that Romney's Oct. 3 debate performance was "like an alien that ripped off his mask and said, 'I'm brand new now.'"

SEE MORE: The Nate Silver truthers: Is the Times' polling guru biased?

Sullivan added that Romney has "no core at all and has changed it a dozen times to appeal to whatever market share he's appealing to."

It is surely true that the Mitt Romney who voters met during that first debate was dramatically different from the Mitt Romney who Barack Obama helped define in the negative ads he released this summer.

SEE MORE: What happens if Hurricane Sandy delays the jobs report?

In fact, the Mitt Romney who showed up at the debates was different from the Mitt Romney who won the Republican primaries this winter and spring.

Voters don't much care about Romney's past flips so long as his current flop is in their direction.

SEE MORE: Fact-checking the final Obama-Romney debate: Who told the biggest whoppers?

And yet, almost nobody is shocked or surprised by this. Here's why:

First, at this late point in the campaign, the media isn't terribly interested in litigating past policy details, lest it look like they're taking sides. Additionally, the "Romney-is-a-flip-flopper" narrative is decidedly old news. Just as the media collectively yawns when new information about Obama's relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright surfaces, Romney's flexibility is baked into the cake.

SEE MORE: Why the world wants Obama to win

Plus, Romney's so-called moderation is more stylistic than substantive. The bases of both parties now conflate toughness with ideological purity, so winning the GOP primary required Romney to hurl "red meat" rhetoric as much as it required strict policy adherence to orthodox positions.

This is not to say that Romney hasn't Etch-a-Sketched some of his positions. He has. But the Romney we have seen lately has also been temperamentally moderate ? even as he has embraced many conservative positions.?

SEE MORE: The October Surprise is here, and her name is Sandy

Just as Ronald Reagan's charm and demeanor reassured Americans ? and undermined the notion that he was a right-wing radical ? Romney's image since the first debate has been of a friendly and serious leader.?

Of course, there is nothing mutually exclusive about being reasonable and conservative. As Mike Huckabee put it four years ago, "I'm a conservative, but I'm not mad at anyone about it."

SEE MORE: Top 5 final-debate memes: 'Horses and Bayonets,' and more

The only people upset with Romney's performance at the foreign policy debate seemed to be the hardcore conservatives and hardcore liberals. Both extremes wanted him to appear more bellicose ? for entirely different reasons. But Romney was aiming for security moms and undecided voters in places like Ohio.?

Predictably, the new Romney is driving liberals absolutely mad. Having initially decided it was easier to tag him as an ultra-conservative than as a flip-flopper, they went into the first debate hoping to?cast him as a war-mongering plutocrat.

SEE MORE: Presidential ad spending: By the numbers

During that final debate, President Obama tried desperately to prove that Romney was instead a political chameleon. That didn't work, either. The look on Obama's face was one of frustration and disdain. I have seen that look before. It was the same look Romney's Republican adversaries had every time they failed to make Romney pay for his evolving positions during the GOP primary.??

(Obama has since invented the term "Romnesia," and referred to Romney in a Rolling Stone interview as a "bullshitter.")

SEE MORE: Why Obama and Romney aren't talking about climate change

In many ways, we all learned the wrong lessons from John Kerry's defeat in 2004. He was cast as an effete windsurfer that voted for it before he voted against it. And so, we all assumed that flip-flopping was the unforgivable sin, and that catching someone doing it was a silver bullet.

But as frustrating as it may be, the one consistent thing Romney's opponents have learned is that voters don't much care about your past flip so long as your current flop is in their direction. In the primary, grassroots conservatives were generally okay with him flipping to their points of view. Now, voters looking for a serious moderate are relieved to see Romney flop their way.

SEE MORE: Obama vs. Romney: Who really has the momentum?

And the truth is that voters often go with their intuition ? and at the "gut" level, Romney is a moderate. It's entirely plausible that the reason Romney is now surging ? the reason he is now more likeable ? is that this Mitt Romney is actually more authentic than the "severely conservative" Mitt Romney.?

Either way, politicians should quit expecting voters to care about consistency (even if we agree they?should care). Voters aren't like a jury sworn to weigh the evidence and then hold people accountable for past actions or inconsistencies. Instead, they are more like a committee tasked to hire someone for the future.?

SEE MORE: Obama's final debate victory: Will it give him a boost?

Expecting someone to be shocked that a politician would move to the right (or left) to win a primary, and then tack to the center, is like Casablanca's Captain Renault being shocked ? SHOCKED! ? to find gambling at Rick's Caf?.

The people who try to point out inconsistencies, more often than not, look like tattletales, while the voters are more sophisticated and Emersonian in their acceptance of the notion that "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Police bosses say they'll move from Scotland Yard

(AP) ? London's police force says it will move from its headquarters at New Scotland Yard as it faces making budget cuts of more than 500 million pounds ($800 million).

Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey told the mayor's office Tuesday that it plans to save 6.5 million pounds per year by moving to a smaller building.

New Scotland Yard has been on London's Victoria Street since 1967. Planned staffing cuts will make the massive central London building an expensive luxury.

A move is expected to take around two years once approvals are in place.

Always remember that the title or subject will be the first impression a reader sees upon opening their inbox, so it is important to make sure it is funny, interesting, and makes them want to see the rest of the message. By quickly gaining their interest, you help to ensure they will read and, hopefully, respond to your message.

TIP! Keep your emails as personal as they can be. When a business is more personal, they feel that they can better relate to them.

Be ethical, and send your marketing emails only to those who have provided their permission for you to contact them this way. Sending messages to people who aren?t interested will lead to them blocking your emails. If your email provider receives complaints from enough people about you sending spam, they could drop you for policy violations.

TIP! Major holidays are generally not the best time to send marketing emails. People are likely to be away from their offices and computers or just preoccupied with other matters.

Only make one clear message for each email you send. Keep your content concise and focused, so your customers do not become disinterested. Create the specific message using brevity and conciseness. Your customer base will greatly appreciate not being perplexed by too much unnecessary information.

TIP! Branding your business is important, and it needs to work with all of your marketing efforts. Design a great template that will enable you to show off your company?s logo, along with any special colors or fonts that you display prominently on your business?s website.

Your email promoting content should be attention grabbing. This could involve some trial and error on your part. If some aspect of your campaign isn?t working, change it as soon as possible. Even if a particular technique does seem successful, continue trying new strategies to constantly improve your campaign.

TIP! You should try and make your email messages as personal as possible. By making the email seem personalized, and less like a form letter, the recipient is less likely to ignore it.

Create your email list from people who have requested to receive it. You shouldn?t simply purchase or rent a listing. Most organic lists are built using sign up forms on business websites, but don?t neglect other list-building opportunities such as trade shows and offline advertising. Doing so is a way to target the right people and improve your business.

TIP! Keep in mind that email marketing is all about building up your reputation. Avoid doing anything that could be considered misleading.

On your sign-up page, give your customers the option of providing their first name. That way, you?ll be able to customize your emails so that they individually address each customer to make the experience personal. This personal connection helps recipients feel visible rather than just one of the crowd of people who are receiving a bulk email. This will make them more interested in your emails.

TIP! Email marketing can be an effective method of keeping your business on the minds of your customers. When creating an email message, you want it to be short.

To cover all your bases, try using multi-part messages in your campaign. The communications you send out should include both plain text and HTML content to properly show up in their email messages. This will help make your emails accessible to everyone: Remember that someone who uses an email client supporting text only will not open emails containing only HTML.

TIP! Use Alt tags if your messages contain images. The text in these tags will replace the images that fail to load, or are prevented from loading by the email client.

Always proofread every email before sending it out. Although it sounds obvious, many would be surprised by the number of errors that inexperienced companies often have in their emails. Use a business tone in your e-mails if you want to be taken seriously. Nope! Marketing with email is a vital part of your promotional campaign.

TIP! Use your emails to give your customers incentives. People will buy something from you if you provide them with a reason to do so.

Combining your email strategy with a social network strategy can net big returns. Facebook, Twitter and even YouTube can be great sites to interlink with. By sharing your information with their friends and getting their interest in your content, your email list can be expanded.

TIP! Test out different subject lines with the A/B testing method. Send half of your messages with one subject, and half with the other.

You should avoid sending too many emails; one a week is enough. Your customers are busy and don?t want to be bombarded by too many messages. Sending emails too frequently makes it more likely that your customers will stop reading.

TIP! Make sure you have permission before emailing someone. Avoid filling up anyone?s inbox with unexpected and unwelcome emails.

All emails should be proofread before they are sent out. You have to make sure all your newsletters and emails are letter perfect. Prior to message distribution, test email layouts so you know for sure that all the text and elements show up in your preferred way. If you have put any links in your emails, make sure they are able to be clicked.

TIP! Set up your data entry to include subscriber birthdate information and send a message of celebration. Set up your system to automatically send out a big ?Happy Birthday? email to subscribers on their special day.

Holidays are an important consideration when it comes to email marketing plans. Plan your strategy for these occasions ahead of time. Come up with email promoting campaigns that are centered around important retail holidays like Valentine?s day, Easter, and Christmas. You can increase sales if you do heavy marketing during the times of the year that business is slower.

TIP! Don?t send spam emails promoting your products. If you send emails that are unsolicited, people will think you are a spammer.

Only send email to customers after they have agreed to receive your mailings. All unrequested emails are spam, whether or not that was the intention of the sender. You may also be in violation of your ISP?s policies if you send out mass emails to customers who have not chosen to receive them.

TIP! Include in every email calls to action. Tell your audience what you expect from them.

Only send emails to those who have requested them. People who you have not built a relationship with will look at your unwanted email intrusion as spam. People will wonder if you are someone that they know, or if they even care! This can lead them to just toss your email, which just wasted your time.

TIP! Concise subject lines are key. Shorter subjects catch the viewers? eye, leading to a greater read rate than a longer subject.
