NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Taylor Schilling, Zac Efron's co-star in "The Lucky One," has secured the lead role in "Orange is the New Black," the new Netflix series from "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan.
Based on Piper Kerman's book of the same name, the series is a one-hour drama about a Brooklyn woman sent to prison for a crime dating back to her college days.
Schilling will star as Kerman, who was held in prison for more than a year, turning her comfortable New York lifestyle on its head. She must immerse herself in prison culture, getting used to a life of practical jokes and fights.
The show is one of several productions that will screen on Netflix before any other platform, a list that also includes David Fincher's "House of Cards" and the rebooted "Arrested Development."
Schilling has also starred in "Atlas Shrugged," the adaptation of the Ayn Rand novel, and the NBC series "Mercy."
