Touts target Indian students in London

Desperate South Asian students are being hunted out by immigration and education touts after the UK Border Agency gave students of the London Metropolitan University 60 days to enrol for courses elsewhere or face deportation.
The LMU was stripped of its Highly Trusted Sponsor status on

Wednesday night by the UKBA, which said some of its non-European students did not possess "decent English," or had overstayed their visa or were skipping classes. The university rejected the accusation and the methodology used by the UKBA, which randomly sampled student records.

There was panic among the students, who demonstrated outside Prime Minister David Cameron's office. But just a few feet outside the north London campus building where the vice chancellor defended his position, HT spoke to an Indian immigration tout who targeted distressed Indian students.

Smartly dressed and describing himself as a "legal and educational services consultant" from Mumbai, the man wrote down the cellphone numbers of a teenaged Pakistani girl, two Nepali men and a man from Andhra Pradesh.

"We can enlist these students in other universities that we are working for," he said, claiming that "thousands of colleges" are being investigated by the UKBA.

In the city of Birmingham, 200 miles away, Bright Learning Academy - run by Indians - is also helping local students enrolled at LMU. "We are a student extension service, and deal with student visas and immigration issues," a woman who gave her name as Meghna Mittal told HT on the phone. "We got an email update this (Friday) morning that some LMU students might be approaching us for getting into other universities."

Questioned, she revealed that some students, although living in the "Birmingham area" were enrolled in LMU, adding: "It's only a 2.5 hour train journey to London."

Such private companies have been able to move in swiftly because students are desperate. Despite repeated offers of help by the university and the UKBA, the fact is that September is the start of the academic year in Britain. Having paid more than 10,000 pounds in fees, no one wants to go back.

Tech tip: Solvent welding plastics | Hemmings Blog: Classic and ...

One common complaint we hear from people who avoid restoring cars built from about the mid-1970s on is that those cars contain increasing amounts of plastic ? plastic interior trim, plastic bumpers, plastic engine covers ? and that repairing automotive plastics is impossible. Yet, as we see from all those plastic welding setups advertised in our favorite restoration supply catalogs, fixing broken plastic pieces is absolutely possible.

Not only possible, but it?s also possible to do without those setups, which can sometimes cost big bucks. In fact, repairing plastics can actually cost next to nothing. I?d read about the solvent-welding technique in the past ? in fact, Scotty Lachenauer wrote a good article on solvent-welding plastics back in Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car #59, July 2010 ? but a more recent post on Hackaday persuaded me to investigate the process a little further. As it so happened, I had a broken piece of A-pillar interior trim from one of the HMX?s donor cars (as seen above), and I had committed to giving a presentation on automotive plastics repair for our most recent Hemmings Mediterranean cruise, so I gave the process a shot.

Step one is identifying the plastic. There?s all sorts of plastics out there, and they all respond to different solvents. Urethane Supply Company has a pretty comprehensive guide to identifying plastics, should the piece you?re repairing not have any identification marks on it. Plastic interior trim is more likely than not to be some sort of polyethylene, such as HDPE. Once you?ve identified the type of plastic, round up some scrap plastic of the same type. Fortunately, I had another broken piece of interior trim from the same car in the same nutmeg color.

Next, you?ll want to find a solvent that corresponds to your particular plastic, which may take some research. Nerf gun modders have actually put together an extensive list of which solvents work on which plastics, but if you?re in doubt, common acetone ? available at any hardware or home improvement store (look in the paint supplies aisle) ? seems to work on most automotive plastics.

The scrap plastic will dissolve quicker in the acetone with more surface area, so I chopped it up into smaller pieces and placed it with some acetone into a glass jar, put a lid on it, and set it aside. This batch took about an hour to get soft and an overnight soak to fully dissolve. Once it?s fully broken down, the plastic separates out into a goop or slurry in the bottom of the jar, with excess acetone floating on top.

While the acetone?s doing its job, prep the piece you?re repairing by fitting the broken pieces together and using some sort of tape to loosely hold the two pieces.

On the opposite side, Vee out the crack to allow the repair to penetrate deeper into the plastic. Some sources claim this isn?t necessary for the solvent welding process because it works via capillary action, but I found that it doesn?t hurt either.

After that, simply brush the dissolved slurry into the Veed-out crack. The acetone in the slurry vaporizes fairly quickly, leaving behind the plastic in the slurry, which bonds on a molecular level to the surrounding material. According to Lachenauer, this bond is about 95 percent as strong as the original plastic.

I found that the thinner the slurry, the more coats it took to build up a level repair. However, thin layers are actually preferable to slopping on one thick layer because thicker coats are more prone to cavitation ? tiny bubbles of acetone trapped within the hardened plastic weaken the bond. Once the acetone vaporizes completely (usually within a minute or two), you can then sand or paint the repair as you would the base plastic.

Note that I only did the repair on the backside of the piece of trim; that?s because I didn?t want to deal with replicating the grain on the front side, and the repair is indeed rather strong. As it turned out, that capillary action I mentioned before actually worked to bring some of the slurry through to the front side, though it doesn?t look too bad. Were both sides free of texture, I would go ahead and duplicate the repair on the front of the piece, then sand it smooth, as Lachenauer did, creating a stronger and almost invisible repair.

I still have quite a bit of slurry left over (I probably needed only a quarter of the scrap plastic I cut up for this repair), so you can see how little scrap material and acetone this sort of repair requires, and how easily I saved this piece of plastic trim from the landfill. With a little imagination and practice, one could not only perform more intricate and extensive repairs, but also (with the use of a flexible rubber mold) replicate broken plastic tabs and conceivably cast new plastic pieces at home.

St. Louis pest control - Want to Avoid St. Louis' Termites? Move to Alaska...or Just Take a Few Precautions
by Mistie Thompson

Request Reprint | Print | About Author | Report Problem | Tweet This While it is true that Alaska is the only state in the union that hasn't seen structural damage from termites, most people probably wouldn't actually pick up and move there just to avoid the little wood-eating pests. So what are your other options? If you haven't seen evidence of termites in your home, there are a number of prevention steps you can take. The Ohio State University Department of Entomology has an excellent list of recommendations, including: -Don't store firewood, lumber or paper against your foundation or in your crawl space -Avoid or minimize use of wood mulch next to the foundation -Make sure water is directed away from the foundation -Keep your basement or crawl space dry But what if you've already seen evidence of termites in your home? Considering that termite damage annually costs U.S. homeowners billions, you should move quickly to minimize structural damage. There are a number of termite baiting systems and treatments - usually requiring specialized treatment and expertise - that will exterminate the destructive bugs, but as with other bug infestations, the term "don't try this at home" is right. For the best termite control and termite removal in St. Louis, contact a St Louis termite expert like Richardson Pest Solutions at http://RichardsonPestSolutions.com to ensure you get rid of the termites without causing even more structural damage to your home due to inexperienced exterminators.

Parade of Mitt Romney supporters set tone ahead of Paul Ryan's speech

TAMPA, Fla. - Seizing the campaign spotlight, vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan embraced "the calling of my generation" to help lead the country in tough times Wednesday night and pledged to cheering Republican National Convention delegates and a prime time TV audience that Mitt Romney will make the bold and difficult decisions needed to repair the nation's economy.

"After four years of getting the runaround, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Governor Mitt Romney," the 42-year-old Wisconsin lawmaker declared in what amounted to a national debut. He spoke at a convention dogged by Tropical Storm Isaac, downgraded from a hurricane but still inflicting misery on millions along the nearby northern Gulf Coast.

"We will not duck the tough issues; we will lead," Ryan said.

His speech was part attack on Obama, part spirited testimonial to Romney, all leavened by a loving tribute to Ryan's own mother, seated across the hall in a VIP box. "To this day, my mom is a role model," he said while she beamed and exchanged smiles with one of his children and delegates cheered.

As for Obama and the Democrats, he said they 'have run out of ideas. Their moment came and went. Fear and division is all they've got left."

Earlier, the convention spotlight shone on a parade of politicians who extolled Romney's experience.

Former?Minnesota?Gov.?Tim Pawlenty?called?Obama?the tattoo president.

Like a big tattoo, it seemed cool when you were young,?Pawlenty?told the convention, but later on that decision doesn't look so good and "you wonder: what was I thinking? The worst part is, you're going to have to explain it to your kids."

The barb was part of?Pawlenty's broader criticism of?Obama's failure to create more jobs and help the middle class. He said between things like taxes, Obamacare, the stimulus and?Joe Biden, "it's hard to choose?Obama's worst mistake."

Pawlenty?was passed over as?Mitt Romney's running mate, but the former Romney rival has been active campaigning for the?GOP?presidential nominee.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said raising U.S. standing in the world depends on solving problems at home, and that the?Republican presidential nominee?is the man to accomplish that task.

Rice?said America's position as the most successful political and economic experiment in history is in danger today.

She spoke of a crisis in education and asked for immigration laws that protect the country's borders while meeting economic needs.

Rice said there is a sense that America has for too long carried the burdens of supporting free people and free markets, but that if the United States does not lead no one will lead, fostering chaos.

Former pastor and one-time presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee spoke before Rice, saying he wanted to clear the air about whether "guys like me ? an evangelical ? would only support a fellow evangelical."

"Of the four people on the two tickets, the only self-professed evangelical is Barack Obama," Huckabee told the GOP convention.

"And he supports changing the definition of marriage; believes that human life is disposable and expendable at any time in the womb, even beyond the womb; and tells people of faith that they must bow their knees to the god of government and violate their faith and conscience in order to comply with what he calls health care."

Referring to the Republican nominee's Mormon faith, former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee said: "I care far less as to where Mitt Romney takes his family to church than I do about where he takes this country."

Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio said the United States is as beholden to China for purchasing bonds as it is to the Middle East for oil, adding that will end if Romney is elected president.

China holds nearly $1.2 trillion in U.S. debt.

Appearing before delegates on his 76th birthday, Arizona senator John McCain joked that he "had hopes of addressing you under different circumstances," a reference to the dreams he once had of speaking as the incumbent in the White House.

Without mentioning Obama by name, McCain accused the president of failing to lead ? on military spending and grave international issues as well.

"Sadly, for the lonely voices of dissent in Syria and Iran and elsewhere who feel forgotten in their darkness ... our president is not being true to our values," he said.

But another convention speaker, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, pointedly disagreed with Romney on defense spending.

"Republicans must acknowledge that not every dollar spent on the military is necessary or well-spent, and Democrats must admit that domestic welfare and entitlements must be reformed," he said.

Differentiating between Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity ...

business continuity vs disaster planningIt is easy to confuse planning for?disaster recovery vs business continuity. Both have a similar goal: to ensure the business can bounce back from a disaster whether man-made or by mother nature. To help clarify, one must look at the task from two different perspectives.

Disaster Recovery (DR) planning takes into account the time, tasks, and resources needed for an organization?s users, communications systems, computer systems, and working environment to be brought back online and running in a productive manner, during and immediately after a disastrous event.? A Business Continuity (BC) plan consists of even more detailed information about an organization?s business processes, operations, and implemented technologies, which includes a company?s DR plan among other content.

A DR plan should not be outlined prior to first having created and taken into account the company?s BC plan.? The BC plan will help the DR planner understand the unique requirements from each business unit, rather than making assumptions which may or may not deliver in a time of need.

To avoid gaping holes in DR planning, create or review a BC plan first; you?ll find the DR plan will come together much easier once the BC is in place and you have a better understanding of your organizations overall requirements.

In cases of either DR or BC planning, it?s imperative to seek the input and participation from all levels of the company, to ensure every critical detail has been addressed and that a trained and informed team will be available to help carry out either plan, if and/or when needed.

Linguistic family trees | TermCoord

?Trees are a gift to students of the past,? posts Johnson, The Economist?s language blogger. ?An entire discipline, known as dendrochronology, is devoted to using tree rings to date ancient wooden objects and buildings. Linguistic archaeologists, it seems, share these arboreal inclinations, though the trees they examine are of an altogether different species.?

Computer-generated phylogenies, or genealogical trees, have been used to map the evolution of the Indo-European language family over millennia, from its roots in ancient Anatolia to the modern day. Now, they are being used to map the spread of these tongues across space.

By collecting vocabulary, compiling lists of etymological relatives and adding information about where and when each word is thought to have been used, researchers have created a ?multidimensional Venn diagram? marking the overlapping similarities between languages.

103 languages form part of the family tree. Each constitutes a leaf. The branches that connect these leaves are determined by algorithms and a certain amount of trial and error.? So, are Icelandic and Iranian siblings or distant cousins? Read Johnson?s full post here ?

Using Fertilizer Wisely Could Help Feed 9 Billion People

News | Energy & Sustainability

Farmers in the U.S. and China should use less fertilizer, freeing it up for application where such nutrients can do the most good

Can the world's existing farmlands provide enough crops to satisfy the hunger of the nine billion people?up from seven billion currently?that demographers predict will be living on the planet by the mid-21st century? Or will more and more forests and other ecosystems have to be cleared to feed all the extra mouths? A new study, published in Nature on August 30, suggests that increasing deforestation could be avoided provided farmers made better use of water and nutrients on land currently under cultivation around the globe. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

The central premise of the new analysis is that intensifying agriculture where it already exists is the key to preserving a balance between farming and forests. To do that, the researchers from McGill University in Montreal and the University of Minnesota (U.M.) analyzed the so-called yield gap. That's the difference between what the highest yielding farm or area within a given region can produce?for example, corn?compared with what the average yield is. The difference between this best-practice farm and the average farm is the yield gap.

The researchers then employed national and regional agricultural data from outfits such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Fertilizer Industry Association to determine the root causes of these yield gaps. Simply by improving fertilizer application and irrigation, the researchers find that global yields of corn, wheat and rice?the three main staple crops?could be increased by 64 percent, 71 percent and 47 percent, respectively.

"We are not claiming to diagnose the exact management practices needed on any particular plot of land," explains research fellow Nathan Mueller, who led the study from the U.M.'s Institute on the Environment, because local factors such as soils and weather can play an important role. Instead, the goal is to identify what practices might help close yield gaps at the regional or even global level and highlight those areas most in need of intervention.

That list includes the U.S. Great Plains and China, where more fertilizer is used than is strictly necessary. For example, American farmers apply so much fertilizer on Midwestern corn fields that much of it ends up running off, ending up in the Mississippi River and, ultimately, reaching the Gulf of Mexico. There the copious fertilizer fuels a bloom of algae and other microscopic plants that then die. Microbes that consume the dead plants also use all the oxygen available in surrounding waters, creating a vast "dead zone" that is devoid of sea life?an unfortunate side effect of the demand for more maize.

Lessening fertilizer use in the U.S. and China would free up nutrients to be applied to fields in eastern Europe and western Africa with no detriment to American or Chinese people. As it stands, the researchers estimate that some 11 million metric tons of nitrogen fertilizer and five million metric tons of phosphate could be saved annually at present without diminishing current yields. Those savings then could be applied to underachieving areas.

Endangered tiger cubs caught on camera

Two endangered tiger cubs and their mother have been caught on film in Thailand near the site of a proposed hydroelectric dam.

The black-and-white footage, taken in May, shows a mother tiger investigating a camera trap near the Mae Wong River. After a moment, her two cubs bound through the woods after her.

The tigers are three of the fewer than 300 wild Indochinese tigers left in Thailand, according to the WWF, which released the video of the cubs and mama tiger, along with the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

Panthera tigris corbetti is an endangered subspecies of tiger found only in southeast Asia. Conservation agencies estimate that there are fewer than 1,500 in the wild today, with Thailand hosting a few hundred. According to the advocacy group Tigers in Crisis, one Indochinese tiger is lost to poachers each week, on average. The big cats are also threatened by shrinking habitats and loss of prey. [ See Tiger Cubs Video ]

Now, environmental groups are crying out against a proposed $400 million dam project on the Mae Wong River. The dam would inundate more than 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares) of land in Mae Wong National Park. The dam, and others planned along with it, would also cut the region's fish supply by 16 percent, according to a study released Monday by WWF and the Australian National University. That food supply would have to be replaced by agriculture, according to the report published in the journal Global Environmental Change.

The WWF and other conservation groups worry that the dam project would also bring new roads into tigers' forest habitat. Those roads, in turn, may bring more poachers into the region.

"The good news is that the footage tells us our tiger conservation efforts are on the right track and that this area is succeeding in helping wild tigers reproduce," Rebecca Ng of WWF's Greater Mekong program said in a statement. "If the dam is built, it will literally wash away years of conservation efforts and risks the future of tigers in Thailand."

The Thai government says that the project will help ease problems of drought and flooding in the region, according to the Bangkok Post. Environmental groups are taking the issue to court, filing a complaint with the country's Central Administrative Court alleging that the prime minister and Cabinet violated the constitution by approving the Mae Wong dam before environmental impact studies were completed.

Suicide bomber kills Muslim cleric as Putin urges unity

BOLGAR, Russia (Reuters) - A woman suicide bomber killed an influential Islamic cleric and six of his followers in Russia's southern Dagestan region on Tuesday as President Vladimir Putin visited another mainly Muslim province and called for an end to religious violence.

Said Atsayev, 74, a popular Sufi Muslim spiritual leader also known as Sheikh Said Afandi al-Chirkavi, was killed when the woman entered his home disguised as a pilgrim and detonated an explosive belt around her waist, police sources said.

In a separate incident in another part of Dagestan, a border guard shot and killed seven other servicemen at a frontier post and was killed by return fire, the federal Investigative Committee said.

Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed law enforcement source as saying there were indications the gunman had been recruited by "bandits" - as authorities often refer to Islamic militants. The report could not be verified.

Russia is struggling to contain an Islamic insurgency in the North Caucasus more than a decade after federal forces toppled a separatist government in a war in Chechnya, adjacent to Dagestan. The violence threatens to spread to other mainly Muslim regions.

Apparently by chance, the killings in Dagestan happened around the same time Putin delivered a call for unity and gave a tough warning to extremists during a visit to Tatarstan, a mostly Muslim region far to the north where senior mainstream Islamic leaders were attacked last month.

"We will not allow anyone to tear our country apart by exploiting ethnic and religious differences," Putin said, appealing for unity and calling Russia "our common home".

"Terrorists, bandits, whatever ideological slogans they use ... want to achieve only one thing: to sow hatred and fear," Putin said.

"They stop at nothing - they kill people of the same faith and religious leaders, bring evil and spill blood during religious holidays," Putin said in Bolgar, a settlement in Tatarstan where Islam is considered to have been adopted as an official religion for the first time in Russia in 922.

Putin called for religious tolerance, describing it as "one of the foundations of Russian statehood for centuries," before giving a state friendship medal to Tatarstan's chief mufti, who survived a car bombing last month, and a posthumous Order of Courage to the widow of a deputy mufti shot dead the same day.

It was not clear whether Putin knew of the violence in Dagestan before he made his comments. Atsayev, killed in the suicide bombing, was popular among many in Dagestan, including in the government. Like the deputy mufti slain in Tatarstan, he was an opponent of militant Islam.

Thousands of people streamed to the Dagestani cleric's funeral late on Tuesday and the regional leader declared a day of mourning on Wednesday.

The violence in Dagestan followed an attack on August 18 in which masked gunmen opened fire in a mosque in the province, killing one person and injuring several others, and a suicide bombing the following day that killed seven police in Ingushetia, another province in the turbulent North Caucasus.

Also on Tuesday, the Investigative Committee said security forces in Ingushetia killed four suspected militants. Itar-Tass news agency cited local Federal Security Service officials as saying they were involved in the assault on police and had been planning attacks on the first day of the school term on September 1.

Insurgents fighting to carve an Islamic state from the North Caucasus have attacked officials and law enforcement personnel almost daily and have also increasingly targeted mainstream Muslim leaders backed by the authorities.

Putin, who started a six-year term in May, is eager to prevent the militant Islam that fuels the insurgency in the Caucasus from gaining ground in long-peaceful Tatarstan and neighboring Bashkortostan, which is also heavily Muslim.

"WE ARE MORE RATIONAL"

The former KGB officer became president after directing the war against separatist Muslims in power in Chechnya in 1999 when he was prime minister.

Putin's rule has since been marked by violence in the Caucasus and attacks by insurgents from the region, including a suicide bombing at a Moscow airport that killed 37 people last year and subway bombings that killed 40 in 2010.

Muslims make up about 20 million of Russia's 143 million population. Attacks last week by racist soccer fans in Moscow and St Petersburg on Muslims from the Caucasus underscored potentially explosive ethnic tension.

Tatarstan, on the Volga 800 km (500 miles) east of Moscow, has not seen anything like the violence of the Caucasus regions about 2,000 km further south, but the attacks on its chief mufti and his deputy last month rang alarm bells across Russia.

Some Muslims in Tatarstan have expressed anger towards authorities and state-backed religious figures are restricting Islam in the name of fighting radicalism. Some moderate Muslims say radicals have arrived from outside the region.

"We are not the Caucasus. Two Tatars, even if they quarrel can sit down, drink tea and overcome their differences. We are northern people and we are more rational," said Kamil Samigullin, imam of the new White Mosque at the Bolgar settlement visited by Putin on Tuesday.

But Dzhaudat Kharrasov, imam of the Tukayev district of Tatarstan, said: "Radicalism is a problem. It cannot be denied, but it is frowned on by our people."

Iraq PM to present Syria plan at Tehran summit

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was to submit a plan to end Syria's conflict on Thursday based on a halt to violence and formation of a unity government that could include President Bashar al-Assad, his spokesman said.

Maliki was to outline the initiative, under which a Syrian regime figure would negotiate with opposition groups and elections take place under international and Arab League supervision, in a speech to the Non-Aligned summit in Tehran.

"This initiative is a developed version of a proposal that Iraq informally presented during the Arab League summit (in Baghdad in March) to some Arab leaders," Maliki's spokesman Ali Mussawi told AFP by telephone from Tehran.

The proposal includes an agreement by all parties in Syria to end violence and a call for all countries to "stop interfering in Syria's internal affairs."

It also calls for roundtable talks under Arab League supervision and the formation of an interim unity government which "includes all components of the Syrian people, with all factions agreeing upon who heads the government," Mussawi said.

The plan proposes the formation of an independent election commission and polls to be carried out under supervision, as well as the appointment of a regime official to negotiate with opposition groups.

Iraq, which shares a 600-kilometre (375-mile) border with Syria, has pointedly avoided calling for Assad to step down or criticising his government, urging instead an end to violence by all parties.

New Israel campaign calls on Jews from Arab states tell of ...

August 29, 2012

Israel has launched a campaign called ?I am a refugee? for citizens deported from Arab countries to tell their stories and demand compensation for their hardships, local media reported on Wednesday.

In the campaign launched Tuesday, Jews born in Arab states are urged to upload video testimonials telling stories of their deportations to bring greater recognition to the problem, Ynet News said.

?Some 856,000 Arab Jews were expelled or left their homes penniless and arrived in Israel as refugees,? Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, the son of an Algerian refugee, reportedly said in the announcement of the campaign.

?Unfortunately, the story of their expulsion has never won recognition by the international community or any of the Israeli governments,? he said, according to Ynet News. ?I call on every Jewish refugee from an Arab state to tell his or her story and help right the wrong.?

Google offering Google+ for businesses, free until the end of 2013

Google offering Google for businesses, free until the end of 2013

Google is bringing the enterprise-friendly elements of its Apps platform into Google+ in order to help businesses collaborate on projects online. The company's been using the service internally, but feels it's time to launch, in Google tradition, a "full preview" with a free and open beta that'll run until the end of 2013. The feature set includes private sharing, admin tools and, most impressively, hangouts directly integrated into Calendar, Gmail and Docs -- letting you video chat with multiple colleagues while you draft that project proposal, or resignation letter. Apps chief Clay Bavor hasn't mentioned how much the service will cost when the preview period finishes, but we'd be surprised if it was much more than what it currently charges if it's trying to snare the Yammer and Salesforce crowds.

TrustEgg Allows Anyone To Set Up A Trust For Their Kids

trusteggTrustEgg, the Y Combinator-backed startup which will allow anyone to set up a trust for their children without expensive legal fees or detailed financial know-how, is finally moving towards launch by opening up access to their beta list today. The startup, like many of those in the financial services space, has faced a number of regulatory hurdles which has caused slowdowns, as well as the loss of co-founder?Gabe Krambs,?who still advises and sits on the board but no longer participates in day-to-day activities. (He had to "get a real job" to pay the bills.) That being said, TrustEgg's founder, Jeff Brice, who has been obsessed with the idea of?democratizing?access to trust fund creation for seven years now, says that TrustEgg is ready to begin collecting sign-ups in order to make its public debut.

ICANN Name Branding: dot DO or dot DIE | Business 2 Community

ICANN has started dot name evaluations and charging ahead at their full speed. Mathematically it can be proven that any reasonable success of the current 1500 proposed dot names will result in tens of thousands of additional applications in the subsequent rounds.? It is estimated that by the year 2020 there will be 10,000 dot names in operation and by 2025 the number would easily double. ?Such forecasts are not based on technological advances but rather the market demands reflecting sufferings of businesses all over the world facing challenges of their global naming complexities. The dot names and domain name expansion offers new opportunities over wasted budgets on traditional name identity expansion processes as old marketing, branding, and trademarking procedures have already reached their limits.

ICANN is now evaluating 2000 proposed gTLD dot names. Based on the guidelines established and the choice of submissions the most names seem be straightforward cases.? Except the multiple-application dictionary words, where the types and styles of names are not only clearly divided into winners and losers the bidding contests will provide breaking-news excitement. Rightfully, the applicants are expecting miraculous results from each of their million dollar paper works. The bidders will decide ownership; the nomenclature rules determine the performance in the marketplace. The jury is still out on the fate of massive dot names influx as new game changers. However, the Internet world faces two critical issues to make or break the dot game. ICANN luckily holds all the keys, for the moment.

THE EVALUATION PROCESS:
Will ICANN apply the trademark registrability rules where ?similarity? of a name play a significant role or operate strictly on ?identical match? basis? For example, dot apple will only be allowed to Apple Computers while ?dot abble? or ?dot pineapple? becomes acceptable for some other electronic media company leaving options for Apple to litigate the names? Will ICANN name evaluations become qualified benchmarks or simply open hunting season for trademark litigation.? After all, the original ?first come, first serve? domain registration policy created many thousands of UDRP cases, cyber-squatting and ?defensive-registration? industry. Were these good policies and who were the beneficiaries?

THE TRADEMARK CLEARANCE HOUSE ? TMCH
Although, the work is being done at full speed and energies are being consumed on the structural issues and operational framework but what?s missing is the trademark owner?s DATA. Where, when and how will the trademark?s owners data will come into play? Voluntary submissions? No, it will never work. The trademark record is just not a name typed on a single line. On the other hand, a typical trademark record is controlled by local government unless it?s privatized under binding agreements. Like USA, Canada, UK etc. India or Brazil has their own systems of corporate registrations and trademarks filing that are special extensions of such instruments under their Intellectual Property laws. Now let?s all bury our heads in the sand in unison and assume that the countries of the world will gladly hand over the data to create a global trademark clearance house. ?Not really, this will not happen.

This kind of data is already a goldmine. Thompson trademark search services offers a quick global search scan at USD1500 each name and a detailed registrability search costs USD600 each name, each country, each class. ?For a candidate name to expand globally the searching alone for 200 countries plus sorting out 30 plus classes the costs will first kill you before you launch the name.? A name search could run from few thousands to many tens of thousands of dollars within first week. ?A typical global search result for a name like InterLink or United would also come back in many hundreds of pages filled with many thousands of citations. Dozens names, dozens try and now you will also need a truck.

The creation of a single highly functional trade mark clearance house is not possible. Such attempts are akin to earlier theological quests where papacy of the period sent out decrees to global clergy of various faiths requesting them to submit their doctrines to formulate a ?spiritual clearance house? for latter day absolution. It is said, after centuries, they are still waiting for the folded parchments to arrive back.

For the last couple of hundred years the trademark laws have provided high-class civility and bespoke attire to disputes arising from similar or identical name identities.? The country by country registration process to clear any single name by diving into central records and face the prolonged agony to achieve trademark registrations is the sport for multinationals. The Madrid Protocols where some 80 countries recognize and accept each other?s trademark filing is a blessing but it took many decades to arrive this far. Electronic data processing and database management is almost half century old but the trademark records all over the world are much protected silos. Simple, online universality of the global database is unthinkable in the profession. Why?

Mathematically it can also be proven that the top 100 highly diluted names like United, National, Premier are being used by some 100 million businesses all over the world. The individual national registry of each country becomes it own silo and hides the global dilution problems. It worked well last couple of centuries. But not in this current hyper accelerated global cyber branding age? Businesses locked in their own region are regularly investing heavily? in keeping their diluted and useless names alive while convinced they are the only right full owners. Keeping the records last century style steals the simplicity of access and economies of the process.

Over the last decade during the maturity of the ecommerce two distinct features emerged; firstly, the domain name and its fierce expansion and secondly, the possibility of dot names becoming a parallel solution over the old global trademarking search and registration procedures. For example, if there is only one ?dot google? approved by ICANN under the similar logical trademark laws why would it require any other country by country registrations and cumbersome maintenance? ?Firstly, upon approval, it will be instantly functional around the globe and secondly protected by ICANN rules while exclusively owned by Google.

Example dot xxx is generic but exclusive controlled by its owners, instantly global and does not warrant a country by country protection. ICANN rules provide a new type of name identity protection. For proposed names the instant digital presence and superiority of performance is starting to shake down the future of old trademark procedures. Surely, global corporate nomenclature rules and marketing complexities play a very big role in this process. The trademarks will always play very important roles in certain areas, but may not be allowed to dominate the stagnated global name expansion space.

THE BENEFICIARIES: Business communities all over the world; consumer will have more stable and less confusing name brands. Domain names ?expansionists? and digital mentality will flourish.

THE ENEMIES: Trademark traditionalist, old fashioned ?brandistas? and big businesses using last century names that are not capable to fit the new digital platforms.

THE ADJUSTMENTS: Global naming complexities cannot be ignored. ICANN was not formed to tackle such global complexities issue it was created to introduce cute domain names to the world, in time that cuteness has turned into a monster. The time has come for ICANN to adopt major policies based on the rules of naming and corporate nomenclature in the marketplace and incorporate deeper understanding of the nature of the beast among its cadre. The realities and facts are hidden in the massive data bases of names of sorts that drive our global ecommerce.

A domain name irrespective where the ?dot is placed? at the end of the day is nothing but a name and as such must conform to the rules of corporate nomenclature and trademark laws. Or else it will lead to anarchy of the name identities going wild on intellectual property. ICANN cannot hide under the exclusive blanket of technology; ignore the global naming problems, excessive usage of URDPs, massive cyber-squatting or booming defensive registration industry. The time has come to create global forum, and boldly discuss the hard core centrality of the global naming complexities. The silent world awaits the answers.

Sony's on a roll at the IFA 2012 tech conference in Berlin today. In addition to a?new Android 4.0 tablet?with a Surface-style keyboard dock, the company also showcased three new Xperia Android smartphones.

Not much about the three devices was discussed during Sony's presentation, but the company was sure to mention that the Xperia T will have a 4.6-inch HD screen. The Sony rep also dished on the phone's 13-megapixel camera which has the added punch of capturing 1080p HD video. The last feature teased was the T's "sleep to snap" camera shutter feature, which helps take pictures faster even if the phone is in rest mode.?

After the event, the company launched ?product pages that divulged more specifics about each device. In addition to that 1080p back-facing camera, the Xperia T will also sport a 720HD front-facing camera, which is sure to give video calls a much needed bump in visual quality.

The slightly smaller Xperia V packs a 4.3-inch display and the same back-facing camera as its larger sibling, the Xperia T. Sony bills this device as "the ultimate LTE smartphone experience", so expect to the phone to land on AT&T or Verizon networks when it comes to the United States.?

Bringing up the rear in features and size is the 4-inch Xperia J. Because of its 5-MP camera and slim 9.2mm design, we expect this device to be a budget-minded offering in Sony's lineup.?

On the software side of things, Sony says the Xperia T and V will initially ship with Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich, but that the phones will also be upgraded to Jelly Bean sometime following launch. ?Sony reps also used the Xperia T to promote new NFC tools that will be included in its upcoming devices. The first was a bump-to-share feature similar to Samsung's Galaxy S Beam tool. Xperia owners can take their phone and bump it with another Sony products to launch actions such as sharing video to a television or sending music to an audio system.?

Dr Geoffrey Newton, aged 81, died from mesothelioma

Geoffrey Newton had always prided himself on his DIY skills.

Even aged 81, he was fitting a new kitchen and bathroom in his home.

?Over the years he?d done everything from building a boat to converting an old school house into our home,? says his wife Pat, 82, a former GP.

?He was brilliant at DIY. Nothing was ever too much of a challenge.?

Unfortunately, it was this passion that most likely led to Mr Newton?s death in May.

He was suffering from mesothelioma ? cancer of the lining of the lungs ? caused by exposure to asbestos.

Experts say that even a few hours? exposure to the toxic fibres can be enough to trigger the condition later in life.

And a few hours was all it had taken for Mr Newton, a leading orthopaedic surgeon, to remove an old central heating boiler packed with white asbestos from his house in Burton-on-Trent.

?It was 37 years ago, but I still remember all the white dust that came out with it,? says Pat.

?At the time, it was known that brown and blue asbestos (there are three types) were dangerous, but not white, so we assumed the dust was harmless.

?But it?s the only occasion we can think of that Geoffrey was exposed to it, so that must have been the trigger.?

While asbestos has left a cruel legacy for families such as the Newtons, experts are warning it is still very much a risk, mainly due to thousands of homeowners who could unwittingly disturb asbestos while embarking on home renovations.
