**This summer, we?re excited to present ?Community Karma,?a weekly series featuring people just like you sharing their financial stories, personal money tips, how they over overcame hardships, and more!**
Mikey Rox knows how to make his dollar stretch in New York, known as the most expensive city the nation. In fact, he likes to make a game out of it.
?I like to shop,? the 30-year-old freelance writer says. ?There?s nothing fun about paying retail for everything.? This ?frugal game? has especially big payoffs when Mikey is traveling.
This urbanite travels at least one weekend out of each month, and he always does it frugally. Check out his best advice for traveling on the cheap and making extra dough while you?re away.
Find deals for your travel destination before you leave. Mikey happily admits that he ?always travels with a stack of papers.? Instead of tour guide books and brochures, Mikey carries stacks of coupons and daily deals. With sites like Restaurant.com that offer coupons for local eateries, he rarely pays full price for food and drinks while traveling.
Forget the hotel; Stay with a local. ?It?s very rare that we?ll stay in a hotel,? Mikey says. He and his partner find their travels more interesting if they stay in rooms listed on airbnb. They meet new people and save money by not paying high hotel prices.
Compare prices rigorously. Mikey doesn?t settle for the first airfare he sees. Using Kayak.com, it?s not uncommon to find 19 different browser windows open on his computer to compare prices. He always compares flight prices till he finds the best one.
List your extra room as a vacation destination. Mikey and his partner have successfully marketed their home to make money on the side. Their two-bedroom apartment in New York City is expensive, but they can lower their rent?and make money for travel?by listing their extra bedroom on airbnb. Over two years, the couple has made approximately $35,000 in additional income by this means. And Mikey has some great tips for those who want to list their own place:
Bottom Line: Mikey?s tips can help you save money while you travel and even make money while you?re gone. ?Don?t be embarrassed about being frugal,? Mikey says. ?It?s a hard economy for everyone.?
