The importance of minimum viable products and user focus

Michael Jurewitz, former developer tools evangelist at Apple, has been blogging up a storm this week, with two great pieces on two important subjects for developers. First is the idea of minimal viable products, or how much you need to build in order to be able to start selling your current work, and supporting your future work. Jury says:

You need to get your product out the door and into your user's hands. The very act of someone touching and using your product will inherently change what you think you know about it and how you envision people using it. You will change your mind, you will change your plans, and things you used to think were important will melt away and be replaced by other needs and priorities. Having real users is a formative event for a product and one you shouldn't artificially delay.

The second, not unrelated topic is user focus, or understanding how your product will provide a delightful user experience before you type character one on code. Jury again:

Focus on the user. Focus on their life, their problems, and how you are helping them. Put down that database, put down that web server, put down that Core Data model and think. No, this step doesn't involve code. Yes, for many of you this will feel foreign and scary, but focusing on the user is liberating. It frees you from your technical shackles and puts the world in real perspective. Your focus becomes the things that matter, the things that change people's lives. Technology is a hindrance when it doesn't get out of the way. Technology is a hindrance when it becomes the point, as opposed to the human experiences we are trying to improve.

Back in a past life, when I was working in product marketing, I used to think of roadmaps like season arcs of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I'd seen how Joss Whedon would graph out major character moments and beats on a white board, and I wanted that same sense of story, of major plot points, and of epic final releases that he brought to television.

In entertainment, you have to grab the audience. In software, you have to grab the user. Each major point release has to have something interesting in it, and it all has to build to the next major version number.

You can't and shouldn't blow the whole story in the first episode, and you can't and shouldn't blow all your features in a 1.0 release. You should create interest and get the job done, absolutely, but you should also leave people wanting more. And you should know how your next act, your 2.0 is going to premiere, and build towards it. (That's also how you attract and maintain press attention for your products, of course, because we're simply an extension of audience.)

China "resolutely opposes" U.S. curbs on IT imports: state media

BEIJING (Reuters) - China expressed "resolute opposition" and "strong dissatisfaction" with a new U.S. cyber-espionage rule limiting imports of Chinese-made information technology products, state media reported on Saturday.

The remarks underscore growing tension between the world's top two economies after the United States accused China of backing a string of hacking attacks on U.S. companies and government agencies.

China says the accusation lacks proof and that it is also a victim of hacking attacks, more than half of which originate from the United States.

The new provision, tucked into a funding bill signed into law on Thursday, requires NASA, as well as the Justice and Commerce Departments, to seek approval from federal law enforcement officials before buying information technology systems from China.

The United States imports about $129 billion worth of "advanced technology products" from China, according to a May 2012 report by the U.S. Congressional Research Service.

State media including Xinhua, the China Daily and the People's Daily, quoted a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce as saying the U.S. bill "sends a very wrong signal".

"This will directly impact partnerships of Chinese enterprises and American business as they conduct regular trade," said Shen Danyang, the commerce ministry spokesman.

"This abuse of so-called national security measures is unfair to Chinese enterprises, and extends the discriminatory practice of presumption of guilt," the article in the official People's Daily said, quoting Shen. "This severely damages mutual trust between the U.S. and China."

The United States should eliminate the law, Shen said.

Technology security lawyer Stewart Baker wrote in a blog post this week that China could claim that the United States is violating World Trade Organization rules.

However, because Beijing hasn't signed a WTO agreement setting international rules for government procurement, it may not be successful in its challenge, Baker said.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei also urged the U.S. to abandon the law at a news conference on Thursday.

"This bill uses Internet security as an excuse to take discriminatory steps against Chinese companies," he said.

Syrian rebels enter strategic Aleppo neighborhood

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian rebels have taken control of at least part of a strategic neighborhood in the northern city of Aleppo after days of heavy fighting.

The Aleppo Media Center opposition group and Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed say rebels seized control of the predominantly Kurdish neighborhood of Sheik Maqsoud in its entirety late Friday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, however, says rebels took only the eastern part of the neighborhood, and reported heavy fighting there Saturday.

The Observatory also said rebels captured a pro-government Sunni Muslim cleric, killed him, then paraded his body around the neighborhood.

State-run Al-Ikhbariya TV identified the cleric as Hassan Seifeddine. It said he was beheaded and his head was placed on the minaret of Al-Hassan Mosque where he used to lead the prayers.

BlackBerry wins dismissal of U.S. shareholder lawsuit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. shareholder lawsuit accusing smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry of seeking to fraudulently obscure its falling market position was dismissed on Friday.

U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan in Manhattan granted the company's motion to dismiss the proposed class-action lawsuit, finding the plaintiffs failed to adequately allege that the company or various executives had made deliberate and material misstatements.

Sullivan said BlackBerry clearly had failed to keep pace with rivals in developing smartphones and information technology, and "have paid a price for their mistakes by way of demotions, terminations and sizable financial setbacks."

"Nevertheless, corporate failings alone do not give rise to a securities fraud claim," Sullivan said.

David Brower, a lawyer for the plaintiffs at Brower Piven, declined comment. A spokeswoman for BlackBerry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

BlackBerry, known as Research In Motion Ltd until recently, has sought to achieve a turnaround its new Z10 smartphones after years of losing market share as consumers moved to Apple Inc's iPhone as well as smartphones using Google Inc's Android software.

The lawsuit, filed in 2011 by investor Robert Shemian, sought to recover losses on behalf of U.S. shareholders who bought the company's stock from December 2010 through June 2011.

The lawsuit followed series of setbacks the company suffered in 2011. The complaint cites slowing sales of its aging BlackBerry phone product line, delays in releasing a new operating system and a botched launch of its first tablet.

The lawsuit contended all those setbacks were known by the company and its executives, who nonetheless allegedly began misleading investors, who bought its stock at inflated prices.

From February 11, 2011 to June 17, 2011, when the company announced disappointing earnings and announced layoffs, the company's stock slid from $69.86 to $27.25.

The case is Shemian v. Research In Motion Limited, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-04068.

Lawmakers tighten belts amid automatic budget cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Members of Congress are traveling less and worrying more about meeting office salaries. Their aides are contending with long lines to get inside their offices and fewer prospects of a raise. Such are the indignities thrust upon the men and women who brought the country $85 billion in government spending cuts this month.

There probably won't be much sympathy for a senator or congressman making $174,000 a year who is in no danger of being furloughed or laid off, at least until the next election. Still, there has been an effort, especially in the Republican-led House, to show that no one should be exempt from sacrifice.

"As those who are charged with the care of taxpayers' dollars, we need to lead by example," Rep. Candice Miller, R-Mich., who chairs the House Administration Committee, said last week in promoting a bill to slash the budgets of House committees by 11 percent.

Earlier in March ? after Congress and the White House failed to come up with an alternative to across-the-board cuts in most federal programs ? the House imposed an 8.2 percent reduction in lawmakers' personal office budgets. That came on top of 11 percent cuts to members' office budgets during 2011-2012.

"We've drastically reduced travel both for myself and my staff," said Republican Rep. John Campbell, who must cross the country to visit his southern California district. He said he tends to stay in Washington on two-day weekends rather than return home. "I'm more productive here when I'm not rushing to get home," he added.

Campbell said other "little things" he is doing to economize include reducing the office phone bill, cutting off magazine and newspaper subscriptions and using email rather than letters to communicate with voters.

Rep. Luke Messer, a freshman Republican from Indiana, said he hired fewer people when he came to Washington because "we essentially began the term knowing there was a high possibility of a sequester"? Washington-speak for the automatic spending cuts.

So far, congressional staffers appear to have escaped the furloughs that are likely to send thousands of public servants home without pay for several workdays over the next six months and disrupt some government services. "I hope to avoid that," said Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., "but we will take any steps to ensure we don't exceed our budget." Under House rules, a lawmaker must pay for excess spending out of his or her own pocket.

The fiscal pressures are weaker in the Senate, where senators have staff budgets about double the amount of the $1.3 million average in the House and where the office cuts ordered because of the sequester were limited to 5 percent.

While staffers still have their jobs, they may have a harder time getting to them. Security officials have cut costs by closing 10 entrances and several side streets around the Capitol complex, creating long lines to get through screening stations. People "have started to adjust to those changes at the entrances," although it is still a challenge on busy days, said Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer.

Gainer, who oversees nearly 1,000 security and administrative employees, said he hopes to abide by the 5 percent sequester cut without layoffs by enlisting 70 or 80 people for a voluntary retirement program.

Some House members also are feeling the pinch during the two-week Easter break, a prime time for foreign "fact-finding" tours. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, announced last month that members must book commercial flights rather than make use of more convenient but more expensive military aircraft.

Some Democrats have complained the GOP enthusiasm for frugality has come at too high a cost.

"At a time when most members of this body are representing newly formed congressional districts with a need to open new offices or move to new locations, we find ourselves with an 8.2 percent decrease in the very operating budgets that support constituent services," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.

Wasserman Schultz, who also is the Democratic Party's chairwoman, criticized House Republicans for cutting budgets while spending some $3 million for the legal defense of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which bars federal recognition of same-sex marriages.

"We are past the point of cutting what we want, and we are now into cutting what we need ? our ability to attract and retain expert staff," said Rep. Robert Brady of Pennsylvania, the senior Democrat on the House Administration Committee.

Brad Fitch, president and CEO of the Congressional Management Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to improve congressional operations, said it's still possible that House members will have to resort to furloughs or layoffs. So far, he said, they have been able to cope with the cuts of the past three years with less drastic steps, such as reducing the size of their staffs through attrition, making more use of interns and using email rather than mass mailings.

At the end of 2011, Fitch's group recommended 46 possible ways for members to cut $90,000 from their 2012 budgets, ranging from pay freezes, holding more town hall meetings by telephone, delaying purchases of new computers, eliminating Washington staffers' visits to district offices, closing district offices, eliminating bottled water from offices and reviewing spending on food and beverages for constituents.

Italy president denies to resign, will stay to deal with crisis

ROME (Reuters) - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Saturday ruled out standing down to make way for new parliamentary elections after the failure of attempts to form a government this week, saying he would stay in place until the very end of his mandate in May.

Earlier, all of Italy's main newspapers said Napolitano, whose term ends on May 15, was considering stepping down to get around constitutional provisions which prevent a president dissolving parliament and calling elections in the final months of his mandate.

But the 87-year-old head of state told reporters he would continue his efforts to break the deadlock since elections last month that left no single group with enough power to govern.

"I will continue until the last day of my mandate to do as my sense of national responsibility suggests, without hiding from the country the difficulties that I am still facing," he told reporters at his Quirinale palace.

He said he would ask two small groups of experts to formulate proposals for institutional and economic reforms that could be supported by all political parties.

Napolitano met leaders of the main parties on Friday to try to find a way out of the stalemate, which has raised fears of prolonged uncertainty in the euro zone's third-largest economy.

However with all of the three main groups in parliament clinging to entrenched positions that have prevented a majority being formed in parliament, hopes of a solution that would avoid a new snap election have faded.

Center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani, whose party controls the lower house but does not have a majority in the Senate, failed to win enough support to form a government from any of the other parties during a week of talks.

He rejected demands by center-right leader Silvio Berlusconi for a cross-party coalition deal that would give the scandal-plagued former prime minister a share in power and the right to decide Napolitano's successor.

Both Berlusconi's group and the populist 5-Star Movement led by ex-comic Beppe Grillo have also ruled out supporting a new technocrat government like the one led by outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, blocking what appears to be the only other option.

The Feed: Food Fighter | The Rivard Report

If you were to stop by?MBS Fitness at any given point in time, you?d most likely see one of two things on the tv screens in the cardio room: ESPN or the Food Network. That may seem a little strange for a gym, but that same mix spills over to the gym floor, where if trainers aren?t discussing lifting protocols, we?re talking about that great new restaurant that just opened, the versatility and virtues of Fage yogurt, or how to cook the best. Chicken breast. Ever.

Food and fitness are inextricably linked, that?s for sure. But what I never realized is how many die hard exercisers are also die hard foodies. There seems to be a transition now in place where real people are back to eating real food. What was once the land of supplements and protein powders and energy bars, is now this great community of shared food experiences that includes everything from pork belly to braised brussel sprouts. Years ago, I never would have guessed the merger would happen, but I?m certainly glad it did.

And while this new awareness continues to unfold all around us, there?s still some very basic truths we fail to recognize: Like that caloric deficit creates weight loss, and caloric surplus creates weight gain. There really is no magic bullet. Eating well almost always means incorporating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

So there are questions. Lots and lots of questions relating to food and health, with almost all of them geared toward fat loss. To help get through some of the muck, I touched base with Amanda Avey, a certified personal trainer and registered dietitian who not only talks the talk, but more importantly walks the walk, having dropped 70 pounds herself nearly two decades ago. I hit her with some of the common questions and scenarios that still roll around from time to time. Here?s what she had to say?

I?m fat and want to lose weight, what should I do?

Amanda Avey lost more than 70 lbs. over a decade ago. She?s kept if off by eating real food and keeping active.

For starters, I recommend you write down a purpose statement, so that you have a very clear reason (or reasons) as to why you want to lose weight. From there we can work together to help you set small, incremental goals, one step, and one change at a time.

But I just want to lose this (points to belly), can you show me what exercises to do to lose that?

What i would recommend first is dietary changes. You can follow that up with supplemental exercise, such as sprinting, or other interval based training. If you want an envious midsection, you should know that abs are not made in the gym, they?re made in the kitchen. Dietary changes are a priority, with fitness coming second? No crunches necessary.

Shouldn?t I just stop eating bread and bananas because those are carbs and carbs are bad and carbs make you fat?

Absolutely! Just kidding? In my experience, things like bread can be a culprit to weight gain, as they can take away from eating higher quality foods. So carbs can play a role, but they are certainly not the final answer. Each person responds a little differently to different elements, so a diet tailored to your own overall health is what works best.

My friend is really skinny and is a vegetarian and does yoga all the time, so shouldn?t I just do that?

You can try it, but there?s no guarantee it will work for you? Your friend found what works best for her, but there?s really no one answer for every person. You have to find what works for you, and what your body responds to best.

My other friend takes raspberry ketones and lost weight, can?t I just do that?

The simple answer is no. Raspberry ketones are not a solution when a lifestyle change is necessary.

Can?t I just take fat burners or some of those pills I see advertised at supplement shops?

Nope. You?re still not addressing the problem of lifestyle. Ultimately, that?s what causes issues. Without addressing those behaviors, your not doing yourself any favors? No pill or supplement can compete with better lifestyle choices.

I have another friend is skinny and runs a lot, so maybe I should sign up for a marathon?

I would encourage you to start with a smaller goal and see how you respond to that activity. Running is not the answer. There?s more to it than that, and your friend probably has a lot more going on besides just running. Chances are they have a healthier lifestyle in general, which includes everything from dietary and sleep habits, to workout patterns and stress management, not to mention genetics.

So then, what should I eat if I want to lose weight?

Eat real food! I encourage people to focus on a diet comprised of whole foods, centered around plants (fruits and veggies), and filling 20 to 30 percent of their plate with proteins, and the remainder with plant based carbohydrates. Avoid all processed foods, and limit added sugar to less than 25 grams a day. Do that, and you should see some pretty good changes take place? But that?s just a start. You should also monitor your energy and cravings throughout the day and tailor your program to your needs? That?s why no single diet works for everyone. People have to accept that health and wellness comes from a little detective work and experimentation. You have to do that in order to find out what works best for you, and to be successful.

Former SAC Capital portfolio manager arrested in NYC, FBI says

FBI agents arrested former SAC Capital Advisors portfolio manager Michael Steinberg on Friday morning following an investigation into insider trading, an FBI spokesman told CNBC.

Details of the charges will be made public later on Friday. A spokesman for the SAC was not immediately available for comment.

Barry Berke, attorney for Steinberg, told CNBC that the former SAC portfolio manager had done "absolutely nothing wrong".

"At all times, his trading decisions were based on detailed analysis as well as information he understood had been properly obtained through the types of channels that institutional investors rely upon on a daily basis. Caught in the crossfire of aggressive investigations of others, there is no basis for even the slightest blemish on his spotless reputation," he said in a statement.

Steinberg, 40, is the most senior SAC Capital Advisors employee to be charged in the U.S. government's probe into how hedge funds may use illegally obtained information to trade. Including Steinberg, nine people have been either charged or implicated with wrongful trading while they were employed at the Stamford, Connecticut-headquartered SAC.

Steinberg's arrest had been widely expected after Jon Horvath, a former SAC analyst who worked closely with him, pleaded guilty last year to using illegally obtained information to trade in Dell and Nvidia Corp. Horvath has been cooperating with the government and had implicated Steinberg.

SAC Capital suspended Steinberg from his post in October 2012, and he has been moving among several hotels in New York City in recent weeks, according to Reuters sources, as he wanted to avoid being arrested at his Upper East Side home where he lives with his wife and two children.

The arrest comes two weeks after SAC agreed to pay a record $616 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to settle civil charges of insider trading. SAC neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing at that time.

But the government made clear that that settlement did not preclude further charges.

As part of that settlement, SAC Capital agreed to pay $14 million to settle charges of improper trading in Dell, in which a former trader who reported to Steinberg had been involved.

What role do small dams play in pollution control?

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Sometimes, little things can add up to a lot. In short, that's the message of a research study on small dams, streams and pollution by Steve Powers, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Notre Dame's Environmental Change Initiative (ECI).

"Small dams, reservoirs and ponds trap water pollution, which provides an important benefit to water resources," Powers said. "This is especially relevant in agricultural lands of the Midwest U.S., where there are lots of small, but aging dams."

Although small individually, the sum total of the small reservoirs and ponds have a global surface area comparable to that of all large reservoirs added together.

Powers and his fellow researchers showed in detail how a small aging dam, which was more than 100 years old and located in agricultural Wisconsin, trapped water pollutants associated with fertilizer and manure runoff. They also showed an increase in downstream transport of nutrient pollution after the dam was removed, which occurred because of concerns about the dam's safety.

"Many small dams are threatened by long-term structural decline and are also filling with sediment," Powers said. "If we don't better incorporate how small dams affect the movement of water and wastes through the environment, their benefit to downstream water quality could be lost. Meanwhile, legacy sediment and pollution currently trapped behind dams could release as dams lose their water storage capacity, fall apart, or are removed deliberately."

Powers notes that there is a crucial need to gain a better understanding of what small dams mean for our water quality before they crumble and disappear.

"I am continuing to work on the subject at a broader regional scale by looking at hundreds of stream and river monitoring stations throughout the Midwestern U.S. to detect signals of dams," he said. "One current goal is to try and figure out which regions are most vulnerable to water quality changes caused by accumulation of sediment and phosphorus behind dams."

The research paper appeared in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Biogeosciences.

Powers is conducting his research as part of the Notre Dame Environmental Change Initiative's Land Use Project. The Environmental Change Initiative conducts policy-oriented research designed to help policy-makers manage environmental changes.

Chief justice a victim of credit-card fraud

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Chief Justice John Roberts has been a victim of credit-card fraud.

A Supreme Court spokeswoman said someone got hold of one of Roberts's credit card account numbers. The court did not provide any other details.

But the Washington Post's In the Loop column, which first reported the item, said Roberts told the cashier at a Starbucks in suburban Maryland that he had to use cash for his morning coffee because he canceled the card after discovering that someone else had the numbers.

The last reported criminal incident involving a justice was in May, when someone broke into the Washington home of Justice Stephen Breyer. No one was home at the time.

North Korea puts rockets on standby as US official warns regime is no 'paper tiger'

North Korea put its rocket units on standby Friday to attack U.S. military bases in South Korea and the Pacific, after repeated threats one day after two American stealth bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula in a military exercise.

A U.S. official warned that the isolated communist state is ?not a paper tiger? and its reaction should not be dismissed as ?pure bluster.?

According to South Korea's news agency, Yonhap, North Korea announced Saturday that it had entered a state of war against South Korea. "In a special statement, the North said it will deal with every inter-Korean issue in a wartime manner," Yonhap reported. NBC News could not immediately confirm.

The two Koreas have been in a technical state of war because their 1950-53 conflict ended under an armistice and not a peace treaty.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell examines North Korea's brewing threats and what they mean for neighboring South Korea.

According to North Korea's official KCNA news agency, the country's leader Kim Jong Un ?judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation? at a midnight meeting of top generals, Reuters reported.

The latest threats come one day after?two nuclear-capable stealth bombers flew from Missouri?to drop inert munitions on a range in South Korea as part of a major military exercise.

The U.S. official emphasized the danger posed by North Korea?s military and the unpredictable nature of its 30-year-old leader.

?North Korea is not a paper tiger so it wouldn't be smart to dismiss its provocative behavior as pure bluster. What's not clear right now is how much risk Kim Jong Un is willing to run to show the world and domestic elites that he's a tough guy,? said the official, who asked not to be named. ?His inexperience is certain -- his wisdom is still very much in question.?

North Korea routinely issues hostile statements but analysts have noted recent remarks have become more belligerent. In December, the North carried out a long-range rocket test and then detonated a nuclear bomb in a test earlier this year.

At a daily news briefing Friday, China?s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China was calling for an easing of tensions.

But some fear the situation could be getting out of control.

North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-un has issued almost daily threats, including the threat of nuclear strikes on Washington, D.C., and Seoul. In addition, Pyongyang has put its troops on combat readiness, warning that war "may break out at any moment." NBC's Ian Williams reports.

"It seems that Kim Jong Un is in the driving seat of a train that has been taken on a joyride," Lee Min-yong, an expert on North Korea at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, told Reuters.

Russia, meanwhile, appeared to criticize the U.S. over Thursday's bomber mission.

"We are concerned that alongside the adequate, collective reaction of the U.N. Security Council, unilateral action is being taken around North Korea that is increasing military activity," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow, according to Reuters.

"The situation could simply get out of control; it is slipping toward the spiral of a vicious cycle," he said.

Louis Davidson : Why We Write #2 - An Interview With Mark ...

My second guest is Mark Vaillancourt (whose last name makes me very happy for the copy and paste feature), who is an Information Management consultant working for Digineer, and is a Regional Mentor for PASS in Canada. Mark is also a speaker at SQL Saturday events, as well as the SQL PASS Business Analytics conference in 2013.

Mark has been blogging regularly since early 2009 on his website (http://markvsql.com/), and interestingly, has degrees in English and Theater, two degrees that almost always lead one into a career in technology.? His twitter account, @markvsql, is also quite active with over 6400 tweets to date. To be honest, I don't enter into this interview knowing nearly as much about Mark Vaillancourt as I did about Thomas LaRock in entry #1, as Mark is more involved in Business Intelligence while I spend most of my conference and blogging time in the OLTP/Relational Engine side of things. I am looking forward to learning more about his writing process and his career in his answers to the following five questions.

Mark is currently working on his first white paper to be published via Digineer?s website. He wouldn?t reveal the topic, but describes it as a topic that he feels is under-served and will help a lot of people. I hope he will give me the link to include in this interview when he gets it finished.

1.? Every superhero has an origin story, and in many cases it wasn't because they specifically were planning to go into the field of superhero-ness. I mean, clearly Peter Parker didn't really want to get bitten by a radioactive spider. So what is your story that led you to spend part of your free time writing about SQL?

In my early days at Digineer, Lara Rubbelke, who actually hired me during her tenure there, encouraged me to blog about my experiences learning SQL Server. Since I was hired there having never worked with SQL Server before, there were sure to be many learning opportunities. Whenever we would talk about the obstacles I was encountering and what I was doing to overcome them, she would always end the conversation with, ?Blog about it.? I finally took her advice and got a blog connected to the old Digineer website. It was some time later that I ended up heading out on my own for my blog, including getting my own domain, with a lot of great advice from Jason Strate. Jason pointed me to, among other things, Brent Ozar?s series about blogging. That was really helpful in getting going. 2. We all have influencers that have advanced our careers as writers. It may be a teacher who told you that you had great potential? Another writer who impressed you that you wanted to be like? Or perhaps on the other end of the spectrum it was a teacher who told you that you were too stupid to write well enough to spell your own name, much less have people one day impressed with your writing? Who were your influences that stand out as essential parts of your journey to the level of writer you have become??

I had a teacher in high school for English, and also for Creative Writing, named Richard White. He taught me the power of verbs, the importance of dialog, and reinforced the old writing axiom, ?Show; don?t tell.? While these three lessons were aimed at fiction, I try to keep them in mind in my technical writing, as well. I try to make my writing sound like I am just speaking. To me, in essence, a blog post is a presentation I only have to give once; a presentation that keeps on presenting, if you will.

I have also been fortunate enough to have an unofficial blogging mentor: Jason Strate. While he was working to take his own blogging to the next level, he was constantly sharing lessons learned with me. Whether it be a new tool he had tried or just even a bit of blogging philosophy, he set a great example. Many thanks to Jason.

3.? Can you describe the process you go through to write (including any tools you find indispensable), from inception of an idea until it gets put out for consumption??

As far as tools go, Snag-It is the best thing ever. I love that application, and not just because my laptop lacks a ?Prt Scn? key. It is so easy to capture screen shots of just about anything and apply highlighting, arrows, shapes, just about anything. I rely on it heavily for images I use in my posts, and sometimes presentations as well.

Although it is not really a tool, I have to say the Flickr is an AWESOME place to get images for blogs and presentations. Jason Strate showed me that one several years ago. Just filter your search for Creative Commons content and provide links to the source for the images you use and you are off to the races. I have found so many great images out there.

As far as process, I don?t know that I have one. But I think I can nail down some actions that I tend to take during the creation of many of my posts.

• Find/Create a fun dataset.
  • The people that created the AdventureWorks database worked very hard to do so and provided examples of a lot of different things in the process. They deserve our gratitude. However, I try very hard to avoid having my blog posts and presentations be about selling bikes and accessories. If you look over my posts, you will see data examples relating to Super Heroes, The Smurfs, Romeo and Juliet? Keeping the datasets fun is part of what makes it fun for me.
    
• If I am demonstrating how to perform some set of actions, I make sure to number the steps as well as the Figures (screenshots, etc) used. Then, I truly document every step along with the expected outcome of each. That takes time. And I am OK with that. When one considers how long a blog post will be ?out there? after it is posted, taking the time to make it solid and clear is well worth it. It drives me nuts when documentation skips some steps in the middle of a process while assuming you just ?know? to do them.
  
• When screenshots are not appropriate to the topic, I make sure to find some fun pictures from Flickr to use. I make sure to choose images that are loosely related in some way to what I am writing about, but a bit entertaining as well. A picture of Devil?s Tower makes perfect sense in a post about ones experiences at a SQL Saturday in Chicago. And a 1960s era Ladies restroom sign is the ultimate homage to the Women in Technology Luncheon at the PASS Summit.

4. Assume a time machine has been created, and you are allowed to go back in time to speak to a group of potential writers, in which you and I are in attendance. What would you tell "past us", and do you think that your advice would change where you and I are in our careers now? <like would you tell yourself that one day you would be sitting here for a rather long period of time answering interview questions and not getting paid for it, instead of??>

The best advice I could give ?past us? is the same advice I give people who tell me they want to blog but are apprehensive.

• Don?t be afraid to blog because you feel you don?t know enough. If everyone waited until they knew everything before blogging or presenting, we would have ZERO bloggers and presenters. Blog now; learn while you do it.
  
• Don?t be afraid to blog about topics that others have already covered. People learn in different ways. While the topic may be the same, YOUR way of explaining may be exactly what someone needs for that AHA moment that has been eluding them.
  
• Don?t be afraid of making a factually incorrect statement and getting called out on it. Mistakes happen. Do your best to verify what you are writing (you will learn a lot during this activity) and you will be fine. If you think a particular statement is true, but are unsure, say so and indicate why. Be honest about what you are writing and people will respect that.

5. Finally, beyond the "how" questions, now the big one. There are no doubt tremendous pulls on your time. Why do you do write?

I have a few different answers to this one.

Before joining Digineer, I worked in general IT. Our department had a purple binder entitled, ?Learned the Hard Way ? or I don?t EVER want to have to figure this out again.? In that binder we placed really obscure problems we encountered along with their solutions. These were issues that happened so infrequently that remembering the details between occurrences was just not going to happen. Sometime I use my blog as my purple binder.

I went to college with the intention of becoming a high school English Teacher. I got as far as student-teaching in a local middle school and even substituted a few times. When I discovered Theater, I ended up putting my main focus into acting. Even so, I am still a teacher at heart and LOVE sharing knowledge with other people. Blogging and presenting are an extension of teaching, as far as I am concerned.

There is a poem commonly attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson (although there is a bit of controversy about that) that really sums up why I do most things. I have loved this poem since high school and try to keep true to its meaning.

to earn the appreciation of honest critics??

to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others;?
to leave the world a bit better,?

Wow, that was quite an interview, chocked full of good advice, and something most blogs about technical writing will not have?controversially attributed poetry. Some of my favorite bits include noting that blogging/writing is a great way to learn, and you don?t need to be perfect to start. I find that the research I do to try to avoid being wrong makes working hours on a seemingly simple topic often well worth it when I am working during the day (during the getting paid part of the day!). And you don?t have to be perfect, as long as you try to get it right, are somewhat interesting and provide something for readers to learn (and remember, there are many levels of readers out there). When you are wrong, a reader or two will tell you? I promise. (Thick skin is very helpful for public writing!)

So far, my biggest surprise has been that I haven?t gotten a particular answer to the time machine question. Stay tuned, someone soon is bound to answer what I have expected (and then I will add a supplementary entry to admit to the answers to the questions I would give myself!)

To the focus of the series, I now have three reasons why my first two interviewees write:

1. Because there are words that have to be written

2. Keep up with stuff I know

3. Working towards success

The second answer is definitely high on my list, but it certainly isn?t quite enough to keep me typing on this keyboard week in and week out in my free time (when minimally I could be building something with my Legos and preserving the springiness of the keys on my keyboard.)? So the quest continues, with my next subject Rob Farley, who will hopefully get us one step closer to the answer to the question of why we write.
