William Morris Endeavor Paid $150K to Satisfy Gambler's Debt to Deadmau5 (Exclusive)

On Feb. 21, 2011, the popular electronic musician Deadmau5 played a set at XS, a swanky nightclub at the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore Hotel Resort. Typically, the artist showcases a mix of progressive house music, but on this night, he slipped in an unusual song selection -- Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer." Even stranger than having a DJ in a mouse get-up swing the turntables to an '80s classic was the square-looking white guy in the background who entered the stage as the nightclub's graphics screamed, "Don Mother F---ing Johnson."

Of course there's a story behind this -- and it involves powerful Hollywood talent agency William Morris Endeavor, a gambler who once won nearly $6 million in a single night of blackjack, another Las Vegas celebrity and one outrageous offer. The tale is now the subject of a pending dispute in a Nevada federal court.

And this story isn't staying in Vegas. According to court papers filed by WME, here's what happened …

A couple of years ago, WME agent Joel Zimmerman traveled to Las Vegas to book a gig for his client -- not named in court papers, but no doubt Deadmau5 as a video below will attest. (In an odd coincidence, Deadmau5's real name is also Joel Zimmerman. They aren't the same guy.)

There, Zimmerman met with Jesse Waits, a big-time Vegas local who is co-owner and managing partner of XS, one of the most esteemed nightclubs in the world.

Prior to booking the engagement, Waits introduced Zimmerman to Don Johnson, identified as being an important Wynn client known to spend $100,000 to $500,000 at nightclubs on any given night. Johnson is also described as the CEO of Heritage Development, which would make him the same high roller who, in a four-month spree, won $6 million at the Tropicana, $5 million at the Borgata and $4 million at Caesars, and has been written about as "The Man Who Broke Atlantic City." He's also apparently a friend of Jon Bon Jovi's.

During the night of Deadmau5's performance, WME says that "Johnson made the following offer to Zimmerman -- if the Client played a song by a certain musical artist during the Engagement, Johnson would pay $200,000 for the Client's service. Zimmerman then spoke with Waits, who vouched for Johnson and assured Zimmerman that Johnson could be trusted to pay the $200,000 if the Client accepted the Offer and played the requested song."

Zimmerman relayed the offer to Deadmau5: $200,000 to play Bon Jovi.

The musician "accepted the Offer and played a song as requested by Johnson," and according to the court documents, the famous blackjack player went on stage "without being invited" and began dancing. The screen behind Deadmau5 announced "Don Mother F---ing Johnson," which WME points out was "controlled by XS."

So here's what allegedly happened next: After the concert, Waits accompanied Zimmerman to collect the $200,000 from Johnson, who was seated at a high-stakes blackjack table and "appeared to be losing a lot of money." When the money was requested, "Johnson screamed at Waits and refused to pay. After Johnson's security approached the table, Zimmerman and Waits left Johnson's hotel empty-handed."

STORY: Deadmau5 Slams Kanye West

The next day, Johnson left Las Vegas in his private jet.

WME, though, didn't want to risk upsetting Deadmau5, among the many electronic artists now bringing sizable commissions to the agency. So Zimmerman told Waits that in order to preserve his agency's relationship, it would need to follow through with the $200,000 payment. "Waits said he would contribute $50,000 toward the $200,000," says WME's legal papers. "The WME Parties contributed the remaining $150,000."

The story might end there if not for a lawsuit brought by Waits against Zimmerman in June. Waits took the WME agent to court for allegedly failing to pay back a $50,000 loan. Zimmerman and WME hit back with counterclaims the following month detailing what had happened one night in Las Vegas.

It's not unusual for outrageous offers to wind up in court. For example, there was the attorney who once promised $1 million on television to anybody who could prove it was possible to fly from Orlando to an Atlanta hotel in less than a half hour. There was also the R&B artist who offered $1 million to anyone who could find his missing laptop. Those cases dealt with unilateral contracts. Here, WME asserts that Johnson's $200,000 offer for a song to be played at a nightclub were intentional and negligent misrepresentations on Waits' part. The agency has also brought an equitable indemnity claim against Johnson.

STORY: WME's Patrick Whitesell Buys His Hometown Movie Theater

In reaction to the counterclaims, Waits filed a motion to dismiss what he termed to be an "incredible story."

"It seems odd that the third-party claim against Johnson does not seek to recover WME's $150,000 by way of claims for breach of contract, unjust enrichment, or indemnification," said the motion to dismiss. "Instead, they want to recover it from Waits for having misrepresented Johnson's intention to perform."

Waits said it was wrong to infer that he knew Johnson had no intention to pay the $200,000.

That might be true, but three weeks ago, the judge in the case said WME's claims "are no more or less credible than Plaintiff's claim in the Complaint that he made a $50,000 oral loan with such indefinite repayment terms. … And although it may seem odd (it does) that Counterplaintiffs do not seek to enforce Johnson's alleged promise under a breach-of-contract or quasi-contract theory, that has no bearing one way or the other on whether the alternative theories … are viable."

The judge dismissed the negligent misrepresentation counterclaim, but allowed WME's other legal theories to survive, rejecting the argument that Waits' statement about Johnson being a reliable man who would be good for $200,000 was merely "opinions or predictions."

Read the Judge's Order on WME's Claims

According to the latest court papers, the parties have reached a tentative settlement but have yet to finalize it. WME declined to comment and it has until Oct. 17 to file an amended counterclaim.

98% A Hijacking

All Critics (59) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (58) | Rotten (1)

To refuse to call A Hijacking a thriller is not to say it isn't thrilling, in a dryly cerebral way.

It's the second feature from the young writer-director Tobias Lindholm, and it showcases his gift for tightly focused stories told without an ounce of fat.

Lindholm doesn't present the film as a procedural for hostage negotiations because he knows too well that there are too many movable parts, too many things that can go wrong.

Methodical and tense ... has the feel of something based on real-life events ... boils down to an arresting portrait of two men, with different backgrounds and abilities, doing everything they can not to break.

We're impatient for action, any kind of action - but preferably the sort that involves a team of Navy SEALs, maybe led by Dwayne Johnson. Instead, we get something like a merger meeting.

Hand-held camerawork, so often a confounded nuisance, here makes the conditions on board the Rozen feel nauseatingly urgent.

When the gut-wrenching conclusion of A Hijacking comes in the form of a single, random act, it's only then you realize how far you've been pulled into its emotional core.

A Hijacking delivers all the thrills the title suggests, but in none of the places you'd expect them.

The danger never reaches the level of chaos, but the subtext and metaphor in the slow-moving humanistic commentary on the motivations and byproducts of capitalism make for an intriguing film.

A smart movie derived out of the small moments that collectively comprise the hostage experience, rather than grandiose gestures.

Lindholm's you-are-there docudrama works as a tense thriller, but themes of negotiation and the ability to empathize provide a rich subtext.

...slow, mostly talk, but tense and realistic...

The level of suspense in this riveting Danish thriller doesn't build in sweeping melodramatic fashion, but rather at a low-key simmer that emphasizes authentic character dynamics.

A Hijacking accomplishes a tricky task, generating tension through talk rather than action.

This absorbing chronicle of a hijacking in the Indian Ocean has the strengths of the best procedural dramas -- it assumes a distanced and objective tone and packs an emotional wallop.

Moment by moment we find ourselves wondering what will happen next...

Auteur Tobias Lindholm does a striking job in grabbing your attention and running with it as he succinctly tells the story of "A Hijacking."

A Hijacking is an absorbing, highly moving film that's lingered heavily on the mind for a couple of days now.

Fires in Manitoba, Canada

NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center

There are currently 27 fires in the northeast section of Manitoba. These fires have burned over 126,000 hectares (over 311,000 acres). Showers have lowered wildfire danger levels in most areas of the province with the exception of northeastern Manitoba where conditions continue to remain dry. The hot temperatures forecasted through this coming weekend will dry forested areas and increase these danger levels. The fire weather forecast for this area is for fast-spreading, high-intensity crown fire that is very difficult to control.

This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite on June 29, 2013. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red.

Samsung Galaxy S4 tops battery life test vs. iPhone, Sony Xperia Z, HTC One, Blackberry Z10

The Samsung Galaxy S4 was named as the smartphone with the best battery life in a test conducted by Which?, a UK-based phone review website.

samsung-galaxy-s4-battery-life

The 2013 Samsung Android flagship beat other flagship handsets, both in the Call Time or Number of Minutes category and Internet Use category.

In the first category, the Galaxy S4 was recorded to have 1051 minutes of call time. It was followed by the Sony Xperia Z, with 985 minutes; then by the Google Nexus 4, with 846 minutes; the HTC One, with 771 minutes; the Blackberry Z10, with 600 minutes, and lastly, the Apple iPhone 5 16GB, with 499 minutes.

In the second category, the same handset was clocked to have 405 minutes. It was succeeded by the HTC One, with 339 minutes; the Blackberry Z10, with 335 minutes; the Sony Xperia Z, with 322 minutes; the Google Nexus 4, with 308 minutes; and the Apple iPhone 5 16GB in the last place again with 261 minutes.

In terms of charging time, however, the Apple iPhone 5 16GB scored higher than any of the smartphones included in the test. The iPhone 5 had a charging time of only 141 minutes. Next is the Nokia Lumia 920, with 152 minutes; the Samsung Galaxy S4, with 164 minutes; the Blackberry Z10, with 170 minutes; the Sony Xperia Z, with 171 minutes; and the Google Nexus 4, with 211 minutes.

According to Which?, the Samsung Galaxy S4 bested the other handsets because of its 2,600mAh battery, which is able to offer at least two times the battery life of the iPhone 5. By comparison, the iPhone 5 has a battery with a lower capacity of 1440mAh. This does not allow it to store as much battery juice as the others that were tested. Nonetheless, Apple is reportedly developing a successor to the iPhone 5 which would have a better battery life.

Which? reached these results by using a phone network simulator to ensure that the signal strength does not vary duing the test. It also ensured that the brightness level on the handsets were the same. To allow each handset to perform at its optimum, it also charged the phones fully. Which? clarifies, however, that the test is only a representation. It was performed to give consumers a better idea of how each handset fares when put to the test. Actual usage of the handsets may indicate varied levels of battery life, depending on how the consumer uses the smartphone.

Kenyan shilling steady ahead of June inflation data release

NAIROBI (Reuters) - The Kenyan shilling held steady on Friday, with traders eyeing monthly inflation data from the central bank later in the day.

The shilling was posted at 85.90/86.10 per dollar at 0712 GMT, unchanged from Thursday's close.

Traders expected the currency to hold firm as the data is likely to show only small changes in the price of goods in east Africa's largest economy.

"The market is expecting a slight up in inflation," said Duncan Kinuthia, head of trading for Commercial Bank of Africa.

"The currency may stabilise around (this level). The end-month is coming, so most of the dollar demand has been met, so we expect the currency to trade in a 85.80-86.20 range."

The shilling has lost 1.1 percent this month, partly due to investors buying dollars as they exit Kenyan shares in a broad pull-back from emerging markets after the U.S. Federal Reserve signalled plans to reduce its stimulus programme.

"With the weekend around the corner we expect today to be quiet ... within a range of 85.80 -86.10," Bank of Africa said in a daily note.

RIM posts larger-than-expected loss, shares plunge

TORONTO (AP) ? Shares of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion plunged nearly 30 percent Friday after the company posted a loss and warned of future losses despite releasing its make-or-break new smartphones this year.

RIM also announced that it will stop developing new versions of its slow-selling tablet computer called the Playbook.

Analysts were looking for insight into how phones running RIM's new Blackberry 10 operating system are selling. It wasn't good.

RIM said it sold 6.8 million phones overall versus 7.8 million last year. That includes older models. In wasn't until well into a conference call with analysts that RIM announced that 2.7 million of the devices sold in the quarter were Blackberry 10 models.

RIM's Blackberry 10 operating system is critical to the company's comeback. New phones running the BlackBerry 10 software began selling around the world this year. The BlackBerry Z10, a touchscreen model and the Q10, which sports a keyboard, have received positive reviews, but there was a delay in getting them to market in the U.S.

The first quarter, however, included a substantial period of sales of the Z10 phone in the U.S. It didn't include sales numbers for the Q10 in the U.S. The Q10 just went on sale in the U.S. earlier this month.

Sales results and RIM's projections, however, signal that the new BlackBerry 10 phones are not selling well. The company said it anticipates it will generate an operating loss in the second quarter, too.

Mike Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, said it's clear the new operating system has not turned the company around.

"With Z10, Q10, and Q5 all shipping in the August quarter and BlackBerry still guiding to a loss we believe that is strong evidence BB10 has not turned around BlackBerry in an extremely competitive smartphone market," Walkley said.

Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said on a conference call with analysts that the "transition takes time" and noted things are better compared to last year when "we were told the company was finished."

Shares of Research in Motion Ltd. dropped $3.93, or 27 percent, to $10.30 in morning trading Friday.

The BlackBerry, introduced in 1999, was once the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people. But it lost its cachet not long after Apple released the first iPhone in 2007. Apple's device reset expectations for what a smartphone can do. RIM promised to catch up while developing new a software system called BlackBerry 10, which uses technology it got through its 2010 purchase of QNX Software Systems. But the company took more than two years to unveil new phones that were redesigned for the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand. During that time, RIM cut more than 5,000 jobs and saw shareholder wealth of more than $70 billion vanish.

The Canadian company said it lost $84 million, or 16 cents a share, in the three months ended June 1 on revenue of $3.1 billion. It lost $518 million, or 99 cents per share, on revenue of $2.8 billion a year ago.

Analysts expected RIM to earn 5 cents a share on revenue of $3.37 billion.

The number of BlackBerry users in the world also fell by four million to 72 million. RIM also said it anticipates it will generate an operating loss in the second quarter. Heins noted the highly competitive smartphone market makes it difficult to estimate revenue and levels of profitability.

Heins also announced on the call that he has halted further development of RIM's failed tablet offering, the Playbook. The Playbook has not sold well.

"Our teams have spent a great deal of time and energy looking at solutions that could move the BlackBerry 10 experience to Playbook, but unfortunately I am not satisfied with the level of performance and user experience and I made the difficult decision to stop these efforts and focus on our core hardware portfolio," Heins said.

Heins said they'll continue to support the PlayBook on the existing software platforms and configurations. Asked if RIM will continue to make the Playbook, a RIM spokeswoman said the company is evaluating its hardware strategy.

Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners, said said it's tough for RIM because it's hard to make money on handsets now.

"There are a lot of people that haven't been able to make it happen. For all the talk about Apple and Samsung, there are companies like Nokia and HTC," Gillis said.

Gillis said things look bleaker for the company and it's going to continue to be a struggle.

Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek said the high end global smartphone market is saturated and brutally competitive.

"Everybody is coming to this reality. You talk to HTC, Samsung and even Apple, the high end is saturated. That's a fact," Misek said. "Anybody in the high end who wants a smartphone in the world has one, so you have to knock somebody away from another platform. That is a brutal, brutal market."

RIM has unveiled a lower-cost BlackBerry aimed at consumers in emerging markets, but hasn't said if the device will be available in North America.

Misek was expecting the company to sell 4 million BlackBerry 10 phones. He said the sale of 2.7 million new BlackBerry 10 phones was the most disappointing news Friday.

Under the hood is the familiar 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which combines direct injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging technologies to help deliver 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Our favorite attribute is the torque band: 90 percent of peak torque is available from 1,700 to 5,000 rpm.

Fuel economy?is said to be 16/22 mpg city/highway, for the rear-wheel-drive model. Opting for all-wheel drive will diminish those figures slightly.

The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic and a launch-optimized 4.10 rear axle--the shortest final drive ratio offered in an EcoBoosted F-150. An electronic rear differential is also fitted as standard.

Venezuela finds Italian fashion boss's crashed plane

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela said on Thursday it had found the crashed plane of Italian fashion executive Vittorio Missoni that went missing in January after taking off from the Los Roques archipelago in the Caribbean six months ago.

The small, twin-engine aircraft carrying Missoni, 58, his wife Maurizia Castiglioni, another couple, a Venezuelan crew member, and the pilot disappeared after taking off on January 4.

"The plane that crashed on January 4 has appeared," Interior Minister spokesman Jorge Galindo said, confirming later to Reuters that it was Missoni's plane.

He said the aircraft had been found less than 3 nautical miles to the north of Key Carenero, one of the many keys that make up Los Roques.

A separate statement from Venezuela's attorney-general said the plane had been found at a depth of some 76 meters (240 feet).

The Missoni company said in a statement that the aircraft had been found with the aid of a U.S. oceanographic survey vessel.

Earlier this year, Italy's agency for flight security, ANSV, said its investigation had found that the airline that owned the plane was not fully licensed to operate and that the pilot's license had expired more than a month before the flight.

Missoni was the oldest child of the founders of the fashion house famous for its exuberantly colored knits, featuring bold stripes and zigzags. He was co-owner with siblings Luca and Angela, who handle the technical and design sides of the firm.

Rights group says Egypt's Brotherhood incites sectarian hatred

CAIRO (Reuters) - Human Rights Watch accused Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood on Thursday of inciting religious hatred that led to the lynching of four Shi'ite Muslims in Cairo this week.

Residents of the suburb of Zawiyat Abu Musallem surrounded a house where a prominent Shi'ite cleric had arrived on Sunday for a religious festival. They attacked the guests, killing at least four and mutilating their bodies.

Police arrested eight people over the killings.

"The brutal sectarian lynching of four Shia comes after two years of hate speech against the minority religious group, which the Muslim Brotherhood condoned and at times participated in," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at New York-based Human Rights Watch.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the movement of President Mohamed Mursi, was not available for comment.

Conservative Sunni Muslims, fearing the spread of Shia Islam in Egypt, have increased their anti-Shi'ite rhetoric since a visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in February, who called for a strategic alliance with Egypt.

Shi'ites, the majority in Iran, form a small minority of Egypt's 84 million population and keep a low profile.

"This horrific incident in Abu Musallem shows that Shi'ites can't even gather in the privacy of their homes to celebrate and heightens fear of persecution among all religious minorities in Egypt," Stork said.

President Mursi condemned the crime but his liberal opponents accuse him and his Muslim Brotherhood of allowing ultra-conservative Salafi allies to whip up anti-Shi'ite sentiment in return for their support.

Mursi was a guest of honor this month at a rally where a cleric described Shi'ites as heretics.

HRW's report said the investigation into the attack needed to look into the failure of police to intervene to halt the mob attack.

"The official response to the killings falls far short of what is needed to protect Shia in Egypt from future attack and protect their right to religious freedom," Human Rights Watch said.

Microsoft to unveil latest Windows adjustments

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft is giving people a peek into Windows 8.1, a free update that promises to address some of the gripes people have with the latest version of the company's flagship operating system.

Although the preview version of Windows 8.1 is meant for Microsoft's partners and other technology developers, anyone will be able to download it for free starting Wednesday, exactly eight months since desktops, laptops and tablets with Windows 8 went on sale. The version of the Windows 8.1 update meant for the general public will come out later in the year, though a specific date hasn't been announced.

Many of the new features have been shown off already. A three-day Build conference, which starts Wednesday in San Francisco, will give Microsoft developers a chance to learn more about the new system and try it out. It also will give the company a chance to explain some of the reasoning behind the update and sell developers on Microsoft's ambitions to regain relevance lost to Apple's iPad and various devices running Google's Android software.

There's also speculation that Microsoft could show off a new, smaller version of its Surface tablet computers. One of the new features in Windows 8.1 is the ability to work well on smaller-screen devices.

Windows 8, which was released Oct. 26, was meant to be Microsoft's answer to changing customer behaviors and the rise of tablet computers. The operating system emphasizes touch controls over the mouse and the keyboard, which had been the main way people have interacted with their personal computers since the 1980s.

But some people have been put off by the radical makeover.

Although Microsoft has said it has sold more than 100 million Windows 8 licenses so far, some analysts have blamed the lackluster response to the operating system for a steep drop in PC sales in the first three months of the year, the worst drop since tracking by outside research firms began in 1994.

Among the complaints: the lack of a Start button on the lower left corner of the screen. In previous versions of Windows, that button gave people quick access to programs, settings and other tasks. Microsoft replaced that with a tablet-style, full-screen start page, but that covered up whatever programs people were working on, and it had only favorite programs. Extra steps were needed to access less-used programs. Settings, a search box and other functions were hidden away in a menu that had to be pulled out from the right. How to do that changed depending on whether a mouse or touch was used.

And while Microsoft has encouraged people to use the new tablet-style layout, many programs ? including Microsoft's latest Office software package ? are designed for the older, desktop mode. People were forced into the tablet layout when they start up the machine and had to manually switch the desktop mode each time.

Windows 8.1 will allow people to start in the desktop mode automatically. In that mode, it is restoring a button that resembles the old Start button. Although the Start button will now take people back to the new tablet-style start screen, rather than the old Start menu, the re-introduction of the familiar button may make it easier for longtime Windows users to get accustomed to the changes.

Other new features of Windows 8.1 include more options to use multiple apps. People will get more options to determine how much of the screen each app takes while showing up to four different programs, rather than just two. The update will also offer more integrated search results, showing users previews of websites, apps and documents that are on the device, all at once.

Although Microsoft is addressing much of the criticisms with Windows, it is positioning the update as more than just a fix-up job. From its perspective, the tuneup underscores Microsoft's evolution into a more nimble company capable of moving quickly to respond to customer feedback while also rolling out more innovations for a myriad of Windows devices ? smartphones, tablets or PCs.

It's crucial that Microsoft sets things right with Windows 8.1 because the outlook for the PC market keeps getting gloomier. IDC now expects PC shipments to fall by nearly 8 percent this year, worse than its previous forecast of a 1 percent dip. IDC also anticipates tablets will outsell laptop computers for the first time this year.

The growing popularity of tablets is now being driven largely by less expensive devices with display screens measuring 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally. Microsoft built Windows 8 primarily to run on tablets with 10-inch to 12-inch screens, an oversight that Microsoft is also trying to fix with Windows 8.1.

Microsoft has said the company was working with other manufacturers to make smaller tablets, but it has yet to confirm reports that it is making its own. A smaller Surface with an 8-inch screen would be significantly smaller than its current, 10.6-inch models and would put the Surface in closer competition with Apple's iPad Mini, Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD.

Such a device would coincide with Intel Corp.'s recent release of a new chip line called Haswell. The company says Haswell chips offer a 50 percent improvement in battery life over the previous generation when playing back high-definition video.

In an indication that Microsoft Corp. is clearing out inventory of a Surface tablet running the lightweight Windows RT operating system, the company is effectively cutting the price of that by including a keyboard cover for free. The cover sells for $120 or $130 on its own.

Microsoft also said this month that it would give buyers of the RT version of Surface the Outlook email and calendar program at no extra charge ? joining other Office freebies Excel, Word and Power Point ? and sweetening the offer for the device that is priced starting at $499. That will come as part of the Windows 8.1 update.

CNN bringing 'Crossfire' back on the air

FILE - In this March 16, 2013 file photo, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich apears during the 40th annual Conservative Political Action Conference in National Harbor, Md. CNN is bringing its political show "Crossfire" back on the air this fall with Newt Gingrich as one of the combatants. The original political talk show on cable news aired on CNN from 1982 until 2005. The new version will air on weekdays, although CNN said Wednesday, June 26, that the show has no time slot yet. Gingrich, the former House speaker and presidential candidate, is one of two hosts "from the right" matched against two liberal voices. Conservative commentator S. E. Cupp, who also works at The Blaze, is Gingrich's conservative partner. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, file)

NEW YORK (AP) ? CNN said Wednesday that it is bringing the political debate show "Crossfire" back on the air this fall with Newt Gingrich as one of the combatants.

The former House speaker and Republican presidential candidate will be one of the four regular hosts of the program, taking the conservative side along with commentator S.E. Cupp of The Blaze. Stephanie Cutter, a former campaign spokeswoman for President Barack Obama, and Van Jones, a Yale-educated attorney and advocate for green projects, will speak from the left.

"It just feels like the right time for 'Crossfire' to be coming back," said Sam Feist, CNN's senior vice president and Washington bureau chief. The show will air weekdays but no time slot has been set.

The original aired on CNN from 1982 until 2005, and its alumni list reads like a Washington who's who ? Pat Buchanan, Robert Novak, Geraldine Ferraro, Lynn Cheney, James Carville, Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson among them. It was essentially killed by Jon Stewart.

"The Daily Show" host appeared on "Crossfire" in 2004 and got into a bitter fight with Carlson, with Stewart calling the show "partisan hackery" that did little to advance the cause of democracy. When then-CNN U.S. President Jon Klein cancelled it a few months later, he said he was essentially siding with Stewart.

But with Fox News Channel tilting right and MSNBC leaning left, there really isn't a debate program on cable TV now that is a fair fight, Feist said.

"CNN is really the only network that can have a bipartisan debate show with some level of authenticity," he said.

Each show will have a single topic and feature two of the four regular hosts, joined by two guests who are experts on the particular issue being discussed, Feist said. It will be a studio show without the audience that was used in a later incarnation of "Crossfire," he said.

New CNN chief Jeff Zucker began pushing for the show's resurrection almost since taking over this winter, saying he had long been a fan of it, Feist said.

Virginia Tech scientists find psychiatric disorders may be linked to protein involved in memory formation

Researchers have discovered a pathway by which the brain controls a molecule critical to forming long-term memories and connected with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

The discovery was made by a team of scientists led by Alexei Morozov, an assistant professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute.

The mechanism a protein called Rap1 controls L-type calcium channels, which participate in the formation of long-term memories. Previous studies have also linked alterations in these ion channels to certain psychiatric disorders. The discovery of the channels' regulation by Rap1 could help scientists understand the physiological genesis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

"People with genetic mutations affecting L-type calcium channels have higher rates of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia," said Morozov. "This suggests that there might be a relationship between the activation of L-type calcium channels and these psychiatric disorders. Understanding how these ion channels are controlled is the first step to determining how their functioning or malfunctioning affects mental health."

A single neuron in the brain can have thousands of synapses, each of which can grow, strengthen, weaken, and change structurally in response to learning new information. Electric signals traveling from neuron to neuron jump across these synapses through chemical neurotransmitters. The release of these chemicals is caused by the flow of electrically charged atoms through a particular subset of ion channels known as voltage-gated calcium channels.

Previous studies have shown that blocking these ion channels inhibits the formation of long-term memories. Although it was known that L-type calcium channels are activated in response to learning, how they are controlled was a mystery.

In the experiment, Morozov and colleagues knocked out the gene responsible for coding the enzyme Rap1, which he suspected played a role in activating L-type calcium channels. The researchers then used live imaging techniques to monitor the release of neurotransmitters and electron microscopy to visualize L-type channels at synapses. They discovered that, without Rap1, the L-type calcium channels were more active and more abundant at synapses all the time, increasing the release of neurotransmitters. The results showed that Rap1 is responsible for suppressing L-type calcium channels, allowing them to activate only at the proper moments, possibly during long-term memory formation.

"Our next step is to determine whether this new signaling pathway is altered in cases of mental disease," said Morozov. "If so, it could help us gain a better understanding of the molecular underpinnings of channel-related psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Such knowledge would go a long way toward developing new therapeutic methods."

###

The discovery appeared in The Journal of Neuroscience in the study "Rap1 Signaling Prevents L-Type Calcium Channel-Dependent Neurotransmitter Release," by Jaichandar Subramanian, now a research fellow at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Louis Dye, a staff scientist at the Microscopy and Imaging Core of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; and Morozov, who is also an assistant professor in Virginia Tech's School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences.

Mozilla Wants Scientists To Be More Open

When researchers needed an easier way to share data and resources, and generally collaborate they invented the internet. And then they all went home and let the memes and brunch photos take over. Which is weird. Sure, initiatives like CERN are able to coordinate thousands of scientists toward common goals as a result of the internet, but the process of publishing research really hasn't changed much.

Gunmen in Pakistan kill 2 anti-polio workers

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Gunmen killed two anti-polio workers Sunday in northwest Pakistan, police said, the latest violence directed at efforts to eradicate the disease from the country.

The two attackers shot the two Pakistani health workers while they were on a vaccination drive in rural Kandar village, said Swabi District Police Chief Mohammad Saeed. The gunmen arrived on foot and then disappeared, he said.

No one claimed responsibility for the Sunday attack. Some Pakistani militant groups oppose the vaccinations and accuse the workers of spying for the U.S. They point out the case of a Pakistani doctor used by the CIA to collect blood samples of the family of Osama bin Laden in order to track him down and kill him in Pakistan in 2011.

Islamic militants also try to block inoculation campaigns by portraying them as a conspiracy to sterilize people and reduce the world's Muslim population. Over the past year, nearly 20 health workers from the anti-polio campaign have been killed.

Pakistan is one of the only three countries, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria, still affected by the polio virus. As many as 58 cases were reported in Pakistan in 2012, down from 198 in 2011.

The World Health Organization said in late March that some 240,000 children have missed U.N.-backed vaccinations against polio because of security concerns in Pakistan's tribal regions bordering Afghanistan. It said the health workers have not been able to immunize children in the North and South Waziristan regions ? Taliban strongholds ? since July 2012.

The shootings came a day after a Pakistani al-Qaida-linked militant group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, killed 24 people in the southwestern city of Quetta.

In the first of Saturday's attacks in Quetta, a blast ripped through a bus carrying female students, killing 14.

When the victims were taken to the nearby hospital, a suicide bomber struck there. Other attackers captured parts of the complex, triggering a siege by security forces in which four paramilitaries also died.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the attacks. Six attackers also died in the siege.

Most of Quetta remained shut Sunday in mourning. On a visit to the city, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan promised to find and punish the culprits.

The Pakistan Muslim League-N party, of which both he and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are members, has pledged to bring peace to the country by holding negotiations with militant groups like the Pakistani Taliban.

Khan said the peace dialogue was still open but only for groups that were ready to end violence. "We will hold dialogue with those who are willing to do that," he said. "Those who only want to stick to militancy and terrorism ? they will get the same treatment."

Also Sunday, gunmen shot and killed three police officials at a checkpoint in district Qila Saifullah in southwestern province of Baluchistan, said government official Bashir Ahmad. He said it was not clear what group the attackers belonged to.

Besides the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, the province has long been a scene of low level insurgency by nationalist groups fighting for a larger share of regional national resources.

Key Republican senator says still backs immigration bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator Marco Rubio said on Sunday he still supports a bill to overhaul the U.S. immigration, but reiterated that he wants its stipulations on border security to be tightened in order for the legislation to win approval from Congress.

Rubio, one of the so-called Gang of Eight Republican and Democratic senators steering the bill, has been criticized by Conservative Republicans as being too soft and there have been concerns he could walk way from the legislation.

The lawmaker from Florida said on ABC's "This Week" program that the bill was about 96 percent ready but should include strong measures on border security to ensure there would not be another wave of illegal immigration in the future.

"If we do that, this bill will have strong bipartisan support," Rubio said.

Rubio said he did not believe the Senate would try to push the legislation through without toughening the language on border security.

"If we fail, we're going to keep trying, because at the end of the day, the only way we're going to pass an immigration reform law out of the House and Senate so the president can sign it is, that it has real border security measures within it."

Rubio declined to engage in "hypotheticals and ultimatums" about whether or not he could vote for the bill without added border security provisions. He played down accusations from conservative critics that he has been influenced by Democratic lawmakers in the reform debate.

The bill currently being debated in the U.S. Senate was rolled out in April and would provide a 13-year path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants.

Rubio's Democratic counterpart Robert Menendez cautioned Republicans against trying to use the border security issue to delay the passage of the legislation.

"We are open to constructive elements of how border security can be further achieved, but not if at the end of the day you're just simply using that as an excuse not to permit a pathway to legalization," said Menendez on CNN's State of the Union program.

Republicans and Democrats are anxious to tackle immigration reform, after the increasingly influential Latino vote turned out heavily in favor of President Barack Obama and his Democrats in the November 2012 election.

This has not been lost on some Republicans, including South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, who said the immigration bill would decide who wins the White House in 2016.

"If we don't pass immigration reform, if we don't get it off the table in a reasonable practical way, it doesn't matter who you (Republicans) run in 2016," Graham said on ABC's "This Week" program. "The only way we can get back in the good graces of the Hispanic community, in my view, is to pass a comprehensive immigration reform."
