Bad news is loud, but good news rules

If you look behind the often dire headlines and examine the long-term trends, you'll see that crime is falling, lifespans are increasing, and poverty is ebbing. In other words, there's solid evidence for hope.

There's much more good news than bad news. But bad news travels fast and commands attention. Good news is like water carving a valley or a tree gradually extending its branches. Good news is a child learning a little more each day or a business quietly prospering. We hardly notice it.

Examine the data over time, and you'l find irrefutable evidence of progress: the decline of war and violent crime, the increase in life spans; the spread of literacy, democracy, and equal rights; the waning of privilege based on race, gender, heredity, beliefs (Jina Moore and a team of Monitor writers say this much more specifically in our cover story: "Progress Watch 2012").

Every so often there are vivid scenes of good news -- Neil Armstrong bouncing onto the moon, revelers atop the Berlin Wall, Nelson Mandela walking out of Robben Island prison. But most of the time good news is incremental, which causes it to be taken for granted.

Not bad news. When we hear it, we sit up and ask, "What just happened?" Bad news can make us beat our fists on the table and ask where was God and how can such a terrible thing happen. Bad news is mesmerizing. We can't look away from a collapsing high-rise or an inundated coastal town. We know the meaning of a sidewalk filled with flowers and teddy bears.

Bad news is insistent. In fairness, bad news isn't all bad. It can alert us to problems that need to be addressed. But in the grand scheme of things, there's actually not that much of it . Oh, there's always enough for a front page or a?Web bulletin or a nightly newscast, although sometimes reporters have to travel to the ends of the earth to find it. Bad news has a natural advantage, however. It pulses through humanity's central nervous system -- word of mouth, the media, the Internet. Its images are riveting and its stories are dramatic. It floods the zone.

And when there's a shortage of bad news in the present, we can always turn to the future. Welcome to worry, dread, and pessimism. Sure, things seem OK now, but just over the horizon a disaster is brewing. Don't be a sap. Bad things are on the way.

They probably are. And they'll shock us and again make us wonder if life is out of control. But in this last issue of our news magazine for 202, we're looking in the rearview mirror to see how things are going, and we're finding plenty of reason for hope.

Hope helps. It keeps us going in bleak times and amid disheartening news. But hope has much more credibility when we can point to the reason for it. Asserting that we should all cheer up is sweet. Knowing why is powerful.

Here are some reasons for hope: Extreme poverty is declining. HIV is no longer a death sentence. Technology is transforming everything from African agriculture to urban transportation. Drug violence is decreasing in Mexico. Travel is safer almost everywhere. Crime rates are falling. Somalia is emerging from a long night of anarchy. Myanmar (Burma) is coming out of its dictatorial shell. And while it's true that China and Russia are only semi-free and the Egypt and other post-dictator nations may be going down ill-considered paths, water is still carving the valley. Freedom lives in 7 billion hearts.

Bad news will make headlines in 2013. But good news will quietly rule.

Senate leaders still have no fiscal cliff deal, time running out: senior aide

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...

Critical Review

An article review of Yunfei? Chong ,2011.? ? The Research on how Chinese vocational education break through the current bottleneck of its development , Concurrent discussion on how to establish the mechanism of school enterprise cooperation in Chinese vocational education?. ????Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College

This article focuses on ?how to develop Chinese Vocational Education by establish the mechanism of school-enterprise cooperation . The authors have stressed the cooperation between schools and enterprises that appear to have a problem in creating a program of bilateral cooperation which respectively provide help to achieve a common goal or a win-win due to? the failure of the government to encourage partnerships between schools and enterprises.; government-lead ?. The author aims to highlight the collaboration between industry and academia like ?Dual System?? vocational education models in Germany that provide job internship ,one of the reason for difficulty of school-enterprises cooperation; administrative subordination;. Yunfei mentions that perhaps almost vocational colleges perfom actively, but it not accompany with enterprise or industry that did not contact the colleges forwardly.

This article is significant given that the difficulties of school-enterprise cooperation is lack of talent training as well as evaluated by educational expert. ?However as a result of somewhat abstract implications, the article would perhaps only be of interest on ?co-sponsorship mechanism and policy guarantee especially on government-lead.? The authors have used ?vocational education models to describe the government- lead in developing countries like ;Amerika, England, Germany and Japan; and to compare the efficient model of personnel training.Although showing differences in ??implementation but strives to achieve the common goal of providing provisions to ensure the training is going well. The author mention it provides good reference to strengthen the government ?lead, strengthen the legislation of vocational education, strengthen the overall plan and supervise, and establish the cooperation mechanism.

The author has started writing specifying keywords should be known and so began a discussion on the topic. The author have a very good in processing due to problems in school-enterprise Cooperation is more specific that can identify the cause of how the occurrence constraints to progress chinese vocational education. The topic has an objective to be achive. The author has made a claims that government-lead is the only way to break through the current bottleneck of vocational education development but ?an evidence was provided is not reliable. The conclusion also are drawn just a simple word and not complement. The principal of the text can be better organized

As a conclusion it can be said that the author has managed to transfer information on how to solve the bottleneck problem as experienced by chinese vocational education which should strengthen the school-enterprise cooperation.? To the success of this cooperation must be the government in terms of provision of assistance and reform The author seems to only look to the government-lead, although the schools are supposed to provide entrepreneurship education as recommended by Robert Kowasaki in her book, rich dad, poor dad where he suggested that education for entrepreneurship have since translated children from school. Similarly, vocational education should start at school with teachers who are trained as discussed by Qiu Feiyue and Lifang Le (2010). Quality education will produce a quality student . I am? agree with Malaysia system vocational school that was up grade to be a college and develop the teachers skill.

Ag secretary sees common ground on gun control

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the Newtown school shootings have changed the gun control debate and that rural America is ready to be part of a national conversation that he believes could bring people together.

Vilsack says the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and a recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.

But Vilsack said that the nation has reached "a different circumstance" in the gun control debate. It will take time, but it's now "potentially a unifying conversation," he said. President Barack Obama recognizes that changes to gun laws can't just be decreed from Washington but must come from the "grassroots up."

Vilsack was interviewed Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Report says life expectancy up in B.C.; cancer still leading cause of death

VICTORIA - B.C.'s most-recent vital-statistics report says residents of this province continue to live longer than anywhere else in Canada, although cancer remains the leading cause of death.

The 140th edition of the report by the Vital Statistics Agency contains information about births, deaths and marriages for 2011 and helps the provincial government develop plans for health research and education.

It says life expectancy climbed to 82 years, up from 81.7 years, but the oldest person to die in 2011 lived to be 112 years old.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death, but the report says deaths due to HIV fell to 59 from 253 in 1996.

While the total number of deaths rose to 31,776, the province's population grew naturally by 12,215 people, without taking migration into consideration.

The report says the most popular names selected for boys were Liam, Ethan, Mason, Lucas and Benjamin, but for girls the names Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava and Chloe won out.

German magazine mistakenly publishes Bush obituary

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany's respected news weekly Der Spiegel mistakenly published an obituary Sunday for former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, hours after a family spokesman said the 88-year-old was recovering from illness.

Bush was hospitalized in Houston Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough and moved to intensive care on Dec. 23 after he developed a fever. On Saturday, spokesman Jim McGrath said Bush was moved out of intensive care into a regular hospital room again after his condition improved.

The unfinished obituary appeared on Der Spiegel's website for only a few minutes Sunday before it was spotted by Internet users and removed.

In it, the magazine's New York correspondent described Bush as "a colorless politician" whose image only improved when it was compared to the later presidency of his son, George W. Bush.

"All newsrooms prepare obituaries for selected figures," the magazine said on its Twitter feed. "The fact that the one for Bush senior went live was a technical mistake. Sorry!"

Apple Pulls Legal Crosshairs off Galaxy S III Mini

Samsung Galaxy S III Mini

Riddle us this: Why file a patent claim against a device that isn't actually going to be sold in the jurisdiction ? let alone, the country ? of where you're filing the claim?

Such has been the peculiarity presented to Apple, which announced on Friday that it's no longer pursuing patent claims against Samsung's Galaxy S3 Mini smartphone. Samsung has said that it is not, "making, using, selling, offering to sell or importing the Galaxy S III Mini in the United States," and has maintained this stance ever since Apple asked a California court to add the device to Apple's latest patent dispute last month.

Apple won its first round of patent litigation against Samsung this past August, but that hardly put an end to the two companies' legal squabbles ? which includes Samsung's desire to lessen the approximately $1 billion in damages that it faces juxtaposed against Apple's interest in amending a second round of patent claims to add as many recently released and allegedly infringing Samsung devices as it can.

In other words, Apple's second patent infringement lawsuit includes devices (and claims) that the company didn't address in its first round of patent litigation. And Apple has been zealous about amending its filling to include more Samsung devices as warranted. Samsung, in turn, has been granted permission to add Apple's iPhone 5 to its own patent infringement claims. Both of these trials won't kick off until 2014.

Apple initially argued that its ability to purchase a Galaxy S3 Mini smartphone from Amazon, and have it billed and shipped to a U.S. address, was enough to qualify that the device was being sold in the U.S. And, as such, Apple argued that it should be allowed to include the smartphone as part of the list of current devices that Apple claims infringe its patents.

As part of Apple's withdrawal, the company indicated that it would do so, "so long as the current withdrawal will not prejudice Apple's ability later to accuse the Galaxy S III Mini if the factual circumstances change," as reported by Reuters.

Samsung launched the four-inch Galaxy S III Mini in Europe in November, which numerous pundits saw as a direct assault against Apple's similarly sized iPhone 5. At the time of Apple's request to add the Galaxy S III Mini to its lawsuit, there was plenty of talk that Samsung might bring the smartphone to U.S. markets ? which explains Apple's interest in bringing the full weight of its legal efforts to bear.

Amanda Griffin-Jacob baby shower - Sun.Star Blogs and Specials

The year 2012 has been a fantastic year for me. It was a year of being able to check a lot of boxes in my bucket list. Some of which include traveling to Russia with my best friend, living on my own in a foreign country, joining the festivities of the summer Olympics in London, doing a cameo for a movie, being a brand ambassador for a beauty product, and opening two new restaurants.

I encourage you to look back at the year that was and reflect what you have achieved this year. I am sure there are quite a number of things you will be proud of in the year that passed. I am creating my new goals and new direction for the year 2013 and I am excited like crazy. The year will surely end with a bang; and i wish the same for my readers!

There is something about new beginnings I love. That is why I love the new year and i love baby and bridal showers. These are milestones that are full of hope, and full of wonderful promises of the future.

Amanda Griffin-Jacob was feted with a baby shower by her mom and sister in law for her second baby. It will be another boy for the tv host and cover girl and friends and family gathered at the Peninsula Manila?s Conservatory.

Amanda, who loves traveling, was all smiles in the baby shower thrown for her. Event stylist Bambi Hernandez pulled all stops to make the Travelling Little Man theme work in all the details of the party. The venue was decked with world globes, luggage, and various neckties to complete the globetrot feel.

Guests like Bianca Elizalde, Rita Trillo, Mika Lagdameo-Martinez, Celine Lim, Joey Mead-King, Katrina Feist, Daphne Osena-Paez, and Lexi Schulze had fun at the different games organized for the shower. Winners of the games received products from Mustela and gift certificates from The Spa. Non-winners did not leave the party empty-handed since everyone was given loot bags with Mustela, Friso, Davines items, and chocolates from The Peninsula as gift souvenirs.

The intimate group of friends enjoyed the Peninsula?s afternoon tea menu that had miniature sandwiches, scones with devonshire cream and a variety of fruit jams, with one?s choice of tea. A lovely afternoon for a lovely mother to be.

    Shops & Businesses
These are the places that people usually go to do their shopping or have fun.

    General Shopping
There is one or two in each two supermarkets, depending how big the town is, and only one type owned by the same person, called AFFU. It is usually about two storeys high, with every single food you could have in there, with a small clothes section, and other items e.g. magazines. However, even though there is almost any variety of grocery you can buy here, because there is little of them in a city, there are also many small shops that may specialize in one type of food, e.g. bakery, butchers etc. Newsagents are also quite popular, but usually contain more magazines than newspapers, as all news shout outs are broadcasted on the television.

    Clothes
There are a few main clothes stores. The first one is YOUNG 5EVER, which sells expensive clothes, but is very popular, as it is a 'brand name.' The second one is FOURYU, which, though the clothes are not as good quality and it is not a 'brand name,' is much cheaper than Young 5Ever. SIMPLY is another store, but this would be regarded as the 'Hipster Store' as it would be called, because that is the type of clothes it sells. The last store is CEES&MON, this is a complete variety of clothes with all age groups in mind.

    Food & Eating Out.
Mercury is like today's 'McDonalds,' and is the biggest fast food chain ever, though there are a few others. There is a small caf? called Sharlene's, and a very expensive restaurant named 'An Bia Go Halainn.' Also, in the apartment block is a small restaurant known simply as 'The Place To Eat.'

    Entertainment
There is a cinema with an attached bowling alley and soft play area for younger children. there are two night clubs, the 18+ one called Club Kiss, and the 13 - 18 one called Club Lights. Club Kiss has an attached arcade and casino.

There is a swimming pool, with an upstairs for gym and a separate room for Jacuzzi and spa treatment. There are two libraries and a toy store named Toys4U. The pub/bar is called Wesleys Lounge with Karaoke on Fridays and live music on Saturdays.

-- Most stores are a lot like your average ones today, though perhaps a bit more modern and extravagant.

    The Forgotten Clan

    The Forgotten Clan

Forgotten is basically a group of different creatures who band together when their species outlaw, exile or [tried to] execute them. It's a romance, with action, of course, occasional sex scene and a lot of traveling.

It has come to my attention that almost everybody is only as intelligent as the media, who are unintelligent, judgmental and only see as far as the camera or story. Only a select few are graced with intelligence, common sense, determination, creativity, originality and imagination. Most of these things are actually given to you, believe it or not, at birth. Only a few are obtained.
Are you as smart as the media, or have you the intelligence to do great things one day?

More serious earthquakes predicted in the Himalayas

Dec. 28, 2012 ? A research team led by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has discovered that massive earthquakes in the range of 8 to 8.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale have left clear ground scars in the central Himalayas.

This ground-breaking discovery has huge implications for the area along the front of the Himalayan Mountains, given that the region has a population density similar to that of New York City.

NTU Professor Paul Tapponnier, who is recognised as a leading scientist in the field of neotectonics, said that the existence of such devastating quakes in the past means that quakes of the same magnitude could happen again in the region in future, especially in areas which have yet to have their surface broken by a temblor.

Published recently in Nature Geosciences, the study by NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) in Singapore and colleagues in Nepal and France, showed that in 1255 and 1934, two great earthquakes ruptured the surface of the earth in the Himalayas. This runs contrary to what scientists have previously thought.

Massive earthquakes are not unknown in the Himalayas, as quakes in 1897, 1905, 1934 and 1950 all had magnitudes between 7.8 and 8.9, each causing tremendous damage. But they were previously thought not to have broken the earth's surface -- classified as blind quakes -- which are much more difficult to track.

However, Prof Tapponnier said that by combining new high resolution imagery and state of the art dating techniques, they could show that the 1934 earthquake did indeed rupture the surface, breaking the ground over a length of more than 150 kilometres, essentially south of the part of the range that harbours Mt Everest.

This break formed along the main fault in Nepal that currently marks the boundary between the Indian and Asian tectonic plates -- also known as the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) fault.

Using radiocarbon dating of offset river sediments and collapsed hill-slope deposits, the research team managed to separate several episodes of tectonic movement on this major fault and pin the dates of the two quakes, about 7 centuries apart.

"The significance of this finding is that earthquakes of magnitude 8 to 8.5 may return at most twice per millennium on this stretch of the fault, which allows for a better assessment of the risk they pose to the surrounding communities," said Prof Tapponnier.

Prof Tapponnier warns that the long interval between the two recently discovered earthquake ruptures does not mean people should be complacent, thinking that there is still time before the next major earthquake happens in the region.

"This does not imply that the next mega-earthquake in the Himalayas will occur many centuries from now because we still do not know enough about adjacent segments of the MFT Mega-thrust," Prof Tapponier explains.

"But it does suggest that areas west or east of the 1934 Nepal ground rupture are now at greater risk of a major earthquake, since there are little or no records of when last earth shattering temblor happened in those two areas."

The next step for Prof Tapponnier and his EOS scientists is to uncover the full extent of such fault ruptures, which will then allow them to build a more comprehensive model of earthquake hazard along the Himalayan front.

About the NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS)

EOS is a premier research institute at NTU, Singapore, which conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies.

Funded by the National Research Foundation's Research Centres of Excellence programme, EOS and its field of research contributes greatly to NTU's research strengths in Sustainability, which is one of the university's Five Peaks of Excellence.

GOP Governors Deny The Poor Health Care In Opposing Obamacare's Medicaid Expansion

After she collapsed last year and landed in in a local emergency room, doctors diagnosed her with congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and hypothyroid. They ordered her not to work. She arranged a Social Security disability benefit, and she enrolled in Medicaid, the government-furnished insurance program for the poor. She used her Medicaid card to secure needed prescription medications. Her ailments stabilized.

But this year, the state determined that the $819 a month she draws in disability payments exceed the allowable limit. By the federal government?s reckoning, her $9,800 annual income made her officially poor. But under the standards set by Louisiana, she was too well off to receive Medicaid.

This is how Johnson, 57, finds herself back amid the roughly 49 million Americans who lack health insurance. This is why she must again reach into her pocket to secure her prescription drugs, a supply that runs about $200 a month. That sum is beyond her, so she has gone more than four months without taking her pills on a regular basis. Once again, her feet are swelling and her chest is filling with fluid. Once again, she is confronted with the realization that a lifetime of labor does not entitle her to see a doctor any more than it enables her to gain crucial medications.

How to Tackle Three of the Toughest Interview Questions

    Ramit Sethi

How to Tackle Three of the Toughest Interview QuestionsYou got the job interview. You prepared by studying the company and thinking about your interview answers. Now what? What separates candidates who get job offers from everyone else? It turns out that interviews are not merely about answering the interviewer's questions. Interviewing is a skill that can be systematically improved. Here are three of the toughest interview questions. You'll see what most people say and how to improve your answers to land a top job.

Tell me about your work history

What most people say: "Oh, uhh...well, I started working at Acme Corp doing marketing work. Then I worked at A&B as a marketing manager, managing daily emails. Then I went to C&D, which is where I am now, and I've been in charge of PR and marcom." ?

What you should say: "If you look at my work experience, there are 3 things that stand out. First, I have experience with many areas of marketing, including PR, advertising, and marcom. Second, I have a quantitative background in terms of what I studied, and my recent email-marketing experience. Finally, I've always wanted to take my skills to a larger stage, which is why I moved from A&B to C&D, and now I'm excited to be here talking with you.

Why this works: The hiring manager doesn't need you to walk him through your resume chronologically?he can read what's on the page, after all. It's far more valuable for you to highlight the key strengths of your background. If you've done your pre-interview homework, you'll know what aspects are most important (e.g., in the above example, the candidate noticed that this position would be quantitative, which is why he highlighted his quantitative background).

Tell me about one of your weaknesses

What most people say: "You know, I work too hard and sometimes have trouble with perfectionism."

What you should say: "I've spent the majority of my career working for one industry. In some ways, that can limit my perspective. Of course, I've worked in a variety of departments?and in fact I was promoted faster than anyone else to run project X?but I'm ready to take what I've learned to a di?erent culture and industry, and that's why I'm here."

Why this works: This question is a minefield that traps most candidates. If you answer too honestly?"I'm irritable in the morning and bad at time management"?you're an instant no-hire. But if you answer in a lie, it's transparently obvious. So be honest about your weakness, but be careful to explain what you've done to improve this weakness.

Tell me about a challenge you faced with a coworker

What most people say: "This one time, my coworker and I had a disagreement over something. It was pretty bad, but we worked things out in the end."

What you should say: "I once had a situation when I was presenting business ideas to the CEO of my company. He liked the ideas, but one of the VPs kept shooting them down?and I couldn't figure out why. Honestly, at first I was upset, but after digging into the issue, I realized it was because my plans would impact the VP's work in a negative way. I reached out to him directly, apologized for the oversight, and promised to keep him in the loop in the future. We haven't had an issue since."

Why this works: There are two main reasons the second answer is more effective: First, the longer answer shows how the candidate took control of the situation. Second, notice the difference in specificity. In a job interview, details sell, so the more specific you are, the more memorable you will be.

Interviewing isn't about being inauthentic or sleazy. It's about presenting your very best self to the interviewer and mutually deciding if this is a good fit for you.

Ramit Sethi is the author of the New York Times bestseller, I Will Teach You To Be Rich. He's used these interview techniques to land job offers at companies like Google, Intuit, and a multi-billion-dollar hedge fund.

MMA Marketplace: Chris Leben returns to the cage with a pretty sweet Affliction shirt

Chris Leben hasn't fought in more than a year. After losing to Mark Munoz in November of 2011, he tested positive for a banned painkiller and was suspended for a year. On Saturday, he'll try to get his career back on track against Derek Brunson, a Strikeforce fighter making his UFC debut.

For Leben's return, Affliction designed a shirt featuring graphics from his tattoos.

It has more meaning than your average Affliction design. Unfortunately, the design comes with a high price. Buy it here for $57.99.

Audiogalaxy music app will shut down services entirely January 31st as its team joins Dropbox

When music streaming app Audiogalaxy announced its acquisition by Dropbox earlier this month and closed signups we feared the worst, and now it's been confirmed: the service is shutting down entirely on January 31st, 2013. It had previously announced subscribers would have access to their mixes until the end of this month, but after another month they'll have to move to a service like Google Play Music, or possibly self hosting with Subsonic or something similar. The original blog post mentioned a desire to bring "great new experiences" to Dropbox's 100 million plus users so we may see some of those features again, soon. As for the service itself, Founder Michael Merhej relaunched it just over two years ago after version 1.0 -- a web-based music file sharing service that eclipsed its competitors during its run from 1998 to 2002 -- was squeezed out by RIAA pressure, so we figure anything is possible in the future.
